NBA Expands Use of Live Video on the Bench

The Trail Blazers have been using video on the sideline for years now, loading play onto iPads during games in order to allow players to review plays from the bench. But to do that, the team would have to record the video in the locker room, cut together clips, load those onto an iPad, then take that iPad to the bench for the player to use. It's a bit of a clunky process, though that hasn't stopped the team's from utilizing the video nonetheless.

But new NBA rules go into effect this season that allow teams to capture live video on the bench, which has the capacity to allow both players and coaches to review game footage in a much more streamlined fashion. While Terry Stotts said he's not entirely sure how the team will best utilize the new rules, he plans on using the exhibition schedule to tinker with the process.

"I think we're going to use the seven preseason games to see what benefits we can use it for," said Stotts. "It's new to everybody. We want to play around with it in preseason and just kind of see where it takes us."

Thanks Casey for all your hard work! It's a good article.

I wonder if teams will be able to challenge three point calls? Any ideas how you would use it as a coach?

Instead of waiting until end of quarter, they could review a play being run in the timeout immediately after the play if they wanted, and show player X how he missed an assignment or botched a screen. Immediate feedback is important.

Could this hcp's new role? Hadn't seen his new job specifics as of yet. Seems like he'd be a good fit!

Good call. This is the type of job he'd really excel at, plus it puts him in even closer contact with and responsibility to the team members which is definitely a great perk for him. If I were HCP and had been offered the position of "instant replay provider", it'd be a no-brainer.
