The NBA and National Basketball Players Association have made significant progress toward a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, and there is strong optimism among officials on both sides that a deal could be finalized in the next several weeks, league sources told The Vertical.

The NBA and NBPA each have until Dec. 15 to exercise an opt-out clause of the current 10-year deal that was reached in 2011, but sources on both sides believe that a new deal will be in place prior to that date.

An agreement will eliminate the possibility of a work stoppage in 2017.

During several months of discussions, NBA commissioner Adam Silver and NBPA executive director Michele Roberts, as well as their respective committees and staffs, have agreed upon many of the significant collective bargaining issues, league sources said. Much of the remaining talks are centered upon smaller elements of the CBA, league sources said.

From the outset of the talks, there has been a spirit of cooperation between Silver and Roberts, largely reflective of strong economic times in the NBA.

Among expected changes in the new CBA, league sources told The Vertical: A significantly higher rookie contract scale and two-way contracts between the NBA and NBA Development League that will add playing jobs for the union.

I'd rather not see a third lockout in.... what.... 10 years time?

We had a shortened season in 2012, and prior to that back in '99. Was there one in between there that I'm not remembering?

I bet first round draft picks will be more available then. With rookie contracts currently being so cheap relative to the cap, owners don't give those up easily. They have great value.

Hopefully this comes true so Paul Allen can go shopping. He was known to spurge on 1st round picks when they were more available

actually, it'd be 3rd time in 18 years. Still too frequent.

Remember they changed the CBA in 2012 to reduce Paul Allen's first-round buying habits; used to be you could buy a first round draft pick for however many million per contract (as many as you could acquire), but now you can only buy one like that per year.

Yeah. I kind of figured things would run pretty smoothly. There are too many guys gettin' P-A-I-D. I still think the Player's Association will challenge the one-and-done rule at some point.

This won't last forever. That sweet sweet cable TV money will dry up right around the time when the next CBA will be negotiated. Hopefully by then we'll have had a parade or two because it won't be pretty.

Yeah. It's funny. A couple of years ago I heard the PA was all hammer and tongs about finding a test case to go as far as they could to overturn the rule. Now.... nothing. ???

Neil's new strategy of buying the picks after they strike out with the Orlando Magic seems to be working.

Just get rid of the 2nd round and instead give each team 2 first round picks.
