Ok, I know it's early but there are 6 players averaging at least 30 points and 14 players averaging at least 25 points. Have there ever been this many high scorers in the league before? Why do you think it is? What has changed in the league?

It has only been three games.... so talking about averages is kinda silly.

But if you frame it as overall points scored in the first three games to years past, and it would be an interesting discussion.

1961-62. Six players averaged > 30 ppg for the entire season. All six are in the Hall of Fame.

More recently, 2005-06, three players averaged > 30 ppg for the season, with a fourth averaging 29.3.

Anyone can get hot for 2 or 3 games. Sustaining that for 82 games is an entirely different level of accomplishment.

Very roughly, the pace of the game has changed; in the 60's, when teams averaged 120 a night, 30 points was 25% of the offensive output. Now, when the average is 100, 30 points a game is 20% more of the offense than before.

And you didn't have any three-point shits.

Anyone else remember how the Oregonian used to put out league stats and team stats like every friday? I remember those and scouring through them and memorizing them. Oh how times have changed...

I remember early one season, Cliff started the season off on a tear and they showed him like being in the top 3 in scoring. Then he returned to earth.

Man it was great. A whole page of stats just on the blazers and the NBA. I remember that.

What is this "newspaper" thing you're speaking of?

Last time I bought an Oregonian, it looked more like a grocery flyer than what I remember a newspaper being.
