<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Maybe its not want Avery wants to hear and maybe he doesn't consider the Mavs a jump shooting team but stats don't lie. We might want to penetrate but that doesn't mean we don't make a penetration move then settle for jump shots. So I would say it's accurate that we are a jump shooting team. The Spurs are the best of the 3 in the paint with the Suns right behind them. So what Avery should have said is "we like to penetrate but settle for mostly jump shots" that would be more accurate. Just because the team likes to make penetration moves doesn't make us a points in the paint team.</div>Props to DarenG for finding these stats. Stats don't lie imo. Dallas needs to get more easy shots in thhe paint.
Thing about points in the paint. Other than driving, Mavs will never have a go to option downlow(Spurs have Duncan, Suns have Amare/Marion while not post up players, they score most of their points near the paint). So that makes it jump out even more. But I do think we tend to rely on the jumper a lot, especially this season. I don't know why but I want to see us making more trips to the line and making an effort of attacking and not settling. Luckily, it seems the Mavs do that when it counts. It sucks that it takes a situation to put us in that mindset though.
Everyone says that, but Dallas is the best team in the NBA when it comes to penetrating and dishing it out. That's why we're such a good jump shooting team. We could honestly do both.
Well the Mavericks have a lot of guys that could go to the basket but they tend to settle too much on jumpshots. You rarely see Jason Terry going in to the basket as most of his points are long jumpers or 3 pointers. Josh Howard has developed his slashing game as well as his outside game so he is going to take a few bad jumpshots at times. Dirk Nowitzki used to only shoots jumpshots but especially threes, but this year he has really improved in the paint is less reliant on his jumper even though it is amazing.
When your PF takes alot of his shots from the perimeter, your team has to be considered a jumpshooting team. Espeically when there are very few shots taken from the center position. Also, the Mavs have alot of good shooters from the outside, so there is really nothing wrong with having a jumshooting team. Although it can be bad at times to settle for outside jumpers, it doesn't seem to be affecting them too much considering their record is so great.
I guess when you have the best jumpshooter on your team than your team will likely be mainly jumpshooting. Howard and Harris are good slashers that should attack more than they do.
