O'Neal's return probably means Miami will make a playoff push in the second half, but this is no longer a championship-caliber team. The Heat need to get younger. They need to develop Dorrell Wright into that third scorer they so desperately need, find someone -- anyone -- to take Antoine Walker's bloated contract and parlay Jason Williams' and Michael Doleac's contracts (which expire after next season) into a talented young player. In a deep draft, they need to come away with a versatile big man (Duke's Josh McRoberts?) or a scoring swingman (Florida's Corey Brewer?) to take the pressure off O'Neal and Dwyane Wade.</div>http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writ...eeds/index.html
Re: There's always next year Next year... are you kidding me? The Heat are already too old as it is and by next year Shaq will be even more injury prone and players like Walker,Williams, and Payton are not going to be able to keep up anymore. Unless they decide to get some young talent in the offseason then they are not going to be much better next year.
Re: There's always next year Well, I think going in to this season, the Heat didnt think that they could mantain their Championship status with Shaq deteriorating from another season. The Diesel just isnt what he used to be, and the Heat can't win with how he is playing or not even playing right now. This group of guys is just too old....I totally agree with Josh McRoberts as their pick in the draft. He is a pretty good rebounder, a good scorer, a good shotblocker, and is very athletic. If this team makes the playoffs, they would be VERY lucky if he could drop that low to them. As long as the Heat have Wade, they will always be a decent team, but they are going to have to get young, and develope Wright and Haslem more if they want to ever be a Championship contending team any time soon.
