John Stocktonquite possibly the best passer everI think he was the only player ever with 15,000+ assistsI actually think hes the only player ever with 12,000+ assists...he could pass..he could score..he was amazingKidd is great but I don't think hes touching Stockton

Although, I haven't gotten to see a whole lot of Stockton because I was born in 1991, I must say he was really good from the glimpses I've seen of him.

I think this is actually pretty close. Both players are great passers, neither of them have been amazing scorers over the years, and neither have them have won a championship although they were close a whole lot, AND both were good defenders. One thing that Kidd has a big edge on is that he is one of the best rebounding guards in NBA history, and he has gotten tons of triple doubles. For a man of his size, that is amazing. I also like the fact that Kidd has been an amazing player/passer and he hasnt had a guy along his side like Karl Malone. I think this is a real close call. I honestly dont know who I would take.
are you guys kidding me? Stockton by FAR the best ast and stl man of all time is a good amount better than kidd. Im suprized some people didnt even know he was the asts leader thats just sad. It just goes to show how underrated stockton is.

Given that Karl Malone you could just give him the ball and let him do the work but you dont get an ast for that. I think its even more of a testament to how good stockton was with malone taking a good amount of asts away from him.
Well, Stockton was a much more efficient scorer and a slightly better playmaker. Kidd, on the other hand, is a FAR better rebounder and a better defender. Both got to the Finals twice, but Kidd did it with a lot less to work with. Kidd also never had a 30PPG scorer like Karl Malone to pass to.It's extremely difficult to decide, but if I were to have one or the other I'd probably take Stockton because of his scoring ability giving him an extra dimension on offense. But as an overall player, I think Kidd in his prime was a bit better than Stockton.
I would take John Stockton the best passer of all time and the all time assists leader and he also was a pretty good scorer. Jason Kidd was a very good player in his prime but overall I think Stockton was just a little bit better than J Kidd not disrespecting him at all. He should be in the HOF as well as Stockton.
I loved watching John Stockton when I was a kid. He was so smart and such a dirty player...I would go with Stockton because he was so solid and he had a better jumper. But Jason Kidd was amazing in his prime and was not that far away from Stockton. Stockton has those huge numbers not only because he's great but because he played forever and like Reggie Miller rarely missed a game...the all-time numbers to me don't make much of a difference. This is pretty close but Stockton was so dependable I pick him.
Like BCB said, they are both very good and HOFers...but im going with Kidd. He made K-Mart into a allstar, and as a PG carried his team to the Finals, as for Stockton is a great player in himself, but he had another legend along side him. Both pretty much have accomplished the same, but Kidd has done it with alot less.

Besides Karl Malone and Jeff Hornacek those Jazz teams were pretty rough with very little depth. They had guys like Greg Ostertag, Chris Morris, Adam Keefe and Jacque Vaughn in the rotation...yeesh.

K-Mart purely fed off Kidd and could rarely get anything on his own. Malone is arguably the best PF of all time and could take over a game by himself without Stockton. RJ was still a raw talent, and while he is different than Hornacek give me Hornacek over RJ. After RJ and K-Mart, Kidd had little to work with. Kittles, Aaron Williams, Jason Collins, Scalabrine, etc.. Outside of Kidd the Nets had no one who could really create their own shot, they had a thin bench and Kidd's go-to guy wasn't a quarter of the player Malone was.

Karl Malone got SO many points off of his screen and rolls and his screen and pops with Stockton that its not even funny. Also, he was able to just give Malone the ball on the block and he would be able to score, AND Malone was a good set shooter so he would be able to just give him the ball on the wings for shots. Malone would never create for himself and go to the basket, and if he was around the basket, he wouldnt take more than 3 dribbles. What you said has no truth in it what so ever....Having a strict half court offense would help Stockton. Since Malone couldnt really get out in the open floor in run, he was able to get more touches, and like I said, Malone couldnt and didnt create for himself and get to the basket.

That is alot of talent to have no matter what the rest of your team looks like. Who did the Nets have that were so special? And also, you have to remember that Stockton played with Malone and Hornacek for a very long time. I guarantee you that if Kidd played with that squad for more years than that, they would have made more finals appearances. Im not saying they would have won, but they would have been there more.
Stockton had a lot of talent, especially early on. guys like Jeff Malone, Thurl Bailey, Mark Eaton and Darrell Griffith, than he had Karl Malone and Jeff Malone, also for two seasons he had Adrian Dantley. Stockton never was much of a scorer because the Jazz never really needed him to score a lot. like I said they had a bunch of scorers, but when they needed Stockton to score he could. in 88(might have been 89) when they faced the Warriors they needed Stockton to score and he got around 25 a game. His passing will be his legacy, he broke the all-time assist record in his 10th season I believe. it took Mark Jackson, the next closes, until his 16th or 17th season to surpass Magic Johnson. Kidd will always have the rebounding numbers on Stockton because Stockton always had good rebounding bigmen behind him, Kidd never really has.
