The Washington Post—whose coverage of Watergate four decades agoangered the powers that be, toppled a president, and defined courageous journalism—has unleashed a hornet’s nest of a different sort, one unlikely to earn a Pulitzer Prize. Indeed, Washington’s newspaper of record—which was purchased in 2013 by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos from the storied Graham family—is uncomfortably weathering a barrage of criticism from fellow journalists and others for a front-page story published over the Thanksgiving holiday. The story, by Post technology reporter Craig Timberg and published Nov. 24, purported to reveal how “sophisticated” Russian propagandists had spread fake news through hundreds of web sites to destabilize American democracy, thwart Hillary Clinton and elect Donald Trump to the White House. ... There has also been a fusillade of disparaging commentary in publications ranging from The Intercept to The New Yorker. “I thought it was completely ridiculous that the Post would put this sorry piece of trash on the front page,” Andrew Cockburn, the Washington editor of Harper’s magazine, told The Daily Beast in a typically vehement slam. “The ‘Washington Post’ ‘Blacklist’ Story Is Shameful and Disgusting,” was the headline on Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi’s takedown. The critics panned the Post story’s heavy reliance on the judgments of unnamed “researchers” for PropOrNot.com, a shadowy website launched three months ago ostensibly to expose “Russian influence operations targeted at US audiences, distinguish between propaganda and commercial ‘clickbait’, and help identify propaganda and push back.”
Something the butt hurt crowd will not want to consider is that whatever was hacked and released was the unvarnished and honest truth. The unvarnished and honest truth hurt the criminal's chances of getting elected? LOL Fuck the truth, eh?
im glad that truth came to light. other countries hacking americans and cherry picking it to influence our elections, not so much.
There must be a buried story where our national security tried to influence the re elections of Putin. Does it really matter? At least the Russians won't be so edgy since Hillary is at home. Look at the big lie Bush used to invade Iraq with weapons of "Mass Destruction. Our government can be sinister and often planned underhanded missions since the end of WW2.
well, of course we have. since long before ww2 as well. does that mean we want every other country repaying us in kind for all our past aggression? because we have a lot more than a little hacking coming to us if so.
Kind of makes you wonder why (a) Trump still refuses to release his taxes (b) Key Trumpkin Corey Lewandowski has said that the NY Times editor who published that ONE PAGE of Trump's taxes should be put in prison (c) Somehow the RNC's info never reached WikiLeaks, when the CIA says Russia hacked that, too. But maybe you only care about part of the truth?
Certainly a portion of the truth (and I'm glad the Dems got exposed for the frauds they are), but we don't know yet if the Russians also hacked the Republicans and found equally damning stuff, but chose to withhold. Maybe time will tell that they never had anything (or found anything), but to say definitively that we have the whole truth at this point seems tenuous.
Assange admitted he had files on Trump, he just said he wasn't going to use them, because they were no worse than what was coming out of his mouth, which is a horrible excuse. Transparency is transparency, you release it anyway...unless, he is saving it....maybe he is getting tired of being stuck in that embassy...
