Why is there a SportsTwo forum?

    Now the better question is:

WHY ARE THE Moderators/Community Moderators/Administrators from BBF.com starting a new forum?

    Some of my thoughts:

    1. VerticalScope sucks.

    2. bbb.net rocked until whoever decided to bag couple bucks and sold. Will S2 go down the same path? Nobody can guarantee anything.

    3. NOTHING gets done on bbf.com. If something does get done, it's usually at a snail's pace.

    4. The crashes/bugs is horrendous on bbf.com. Will S2 have an answer for that while offering MORE features?

    5. The mods spend countless hours promoting their little forums/subforums, and it's 100% voluntary. We are suckers. We are fans. We will do whatever we can for the sport, but the most important thing is that we want a place to talk basketball. Is/will S2 be a *better* place to talk basketball?

    6. The masking/edit b.s. on bbf.com is totally out of hand. Anything that's remotely un-p.c. needs to be edited out. There was even talk about the word LeBroom needing to be edited out. That's posters not being allowed to express creativity/themselves. Where is the fun in such a place? Is S2 continuing that, or is S2 "different?"

    Your thoughts?

#4 - This site is completely custom code and the programmers will be around the site to address bugs and problems while adding more features

#6 - You completely misunderstood the thread regarding that topic and your insinuation then as now is wrong.

#4 - "Features" ALWAYS come at the sacrifice of server performance. The more "features" you add, the slower the site becomes. Where is the line?

#6 - I was using that as an example. Frankly, I don't think we should censor words like ass or bitch. If it's fine for TV, it should be fine on the internet. I'd love to talk more about that here, since I really couldn't care less how much people like me or dislike me HERE. lol...

#4 - If the site is properly designed where the load can be balanced between multiple servers and more servers can be added into the balancing, then additionally features don't have to slow the site down .

#6 - I'm not sure how Denny and the admins feel about those words, but personnally, I'm completely against them being allowed. We have far too many kids visit these sites.

    4. Load balancing and server clusters means $$$, and that's coming from............... you? Me? Us? Our browsing experience here on S2?

    6. Shouldn't that be up to the poster to decide? Add a setting in CP for turning on and off profanity or something. I personally avoid using derogatory terms, but I do it by choice, not because I am not "allowed" to.

    Here's the scoop.

This is a very different kind of venture from what verticalscope does. We are 1/3 something like a message board (we have blogs and other things, too). We are 1/3 sports content - sections for a large number of sports will be going up over time. We are 1/3 games and contests (see sportsbook and trivia for our first two).

We have no animosity toward verticalscope, in fact we encourage everyone to keep posting there, keep moderating there, etc. We don't own anyone, nor would we want to make those kinds of restrictions (how could we?). I know I (DaBullz) and MikeDC for certain are going to stay on at bbf as admins and we truly intend to help make that site rock.

The situation at bbb.net was far different than what we're about. bbb.net made very little in revenues, and we were at the mercy of people to pay for our server/hosting services and we gave up all the advertising spots on the site in return. When the site grew too big for the one server, we were looking at technical issues or finding a new hosting partner. VerticalScope was basically that. Some things went well, some things didn't. I'll leave it at that.

This is our venture, and there's enough funding to make it fly. The costs are significantly higher than for just running a vbulletin site, and we're committed to making it through. We're not going to be at anyone else's mercy. We're committed to throwing hardware at the site as it needs it.

We're not interested in selling out.

SportsTwo is not affiliated or owned in any way by VerticalScope.

They've been very good to us and we worked out a deal with them that allows us to create S2. They've got their ideas about how to run things and we've got ours. No harm in that. We don't want competition, we want everyone to succeed. I, and others, are still woking their to that end.

It wasn't our intent for things to go in the direction they did. Of course. And of course you're right, no guarantees. We just give it our best shot.

    We're working on that.

Sure, there's a tradeoff, but it's also possible to do things more or less efficiently. We think the features here will be done efficiently, will be cool, and we'll still get good performance. And if it's not, you'll complain [IMG]

    We think so!

Just can't have that stuff and appeal to kids. Understand it's a compromise. In real life I curse like a sailor

Thank you both admins for the nice point-by-point replies... I now do have more faith in the continued operation and exisitance of S2.

    .....However, the question remains:

WHY ARE THE Moderators/Community Moderators/Administrators from BBF.com starting a new forum?

There must have been a reason for such a venture, no?

......I seriously doubt VS would flat out give two admins their blessings on creating another sports-related forum.

I am trying to be honest and upfront with my feelings before actually putting effort in something that might come back and bite me on the rear end.

We had a vision for doing a sports site like S2. VerticalScope is focused on vb3 based WWW sites.

We really wanted to make this site

I don't know why others are but I'm here because, as corny as this sounds, I believe in the people who founded BBB.net. I work very closely with VS at hockeyforum.com as a SuperMod and I think very highly of them as well, however this is a venture I can't stay away from.

Take the heart and soul of BBB + New tech - red tape X more sports = something I think will be pretty cool.

But Ed, you're asking a lot of questions that I want answers to, so thanks and I really don't know jack shit about what's going on.

Also, pro free speech / anti-censor but I would like this to be a site you're not afraid to few in public.

Well, I like the idea when I first saw the site, but can anybody honestly tell me a big question mark wasn't blinking over his/her head?

Actually, the whole thing reeked of collusion and conspiracy.

Now with some honest answers from admins, some of the speculation can be laid to rest, and it's back to talking basketball....

p.s. I am still not happy about the admins not giving the mods a heads up before that horrible massive layout change, but I guess that's business from another site.
