I live near Mall 205. I work in Tualatin. I left work at 3pm. I got home at 730pm. The next morning I left my house at 6AM I got to work at 725AM. That's almost 6 of the last 15 hours spent in my car on the highway and IU never got out of the city. Kinda insane thinking I could have drove to North Seattle and back in the same amount of time. And BTW what the FUCK are idiots doing in small mazda rear wheel drive pickups with no weight in the back and no chains doing out in this? I swear people are morons and have such short term memories. They cant remember the year before when they left their vehicle stranded? Idiots. I own a 2014 CRV. No chains, no studs, no issues... just needed a bit of common sense....... Fucking Portland tards....
Subaru has a reputation for being a granola muncher but you just cant beat them in the snow. I had a legacy wagon just for the winter there. The only thing you have to adjust for is stopping distance. Getting moving and going where you want to go is no different than pavement. Throw those Michelin x ice tires on it and you can chew through just about anything
I've been iced in without power until about 4 minutes ago for 2 days...was interesting...missed the first game of the season against the Nuggets..good to be back in the world of electricity! Many old growth tall trees came down on the back mountainside of my property...lotta firewood but really hard to get to...spent most of the day yesterday clearing the ice out of the driveway and limbing branches off my power lines....what a storm!
No power sucks. I had my fair share after Hurricane matthew. That first warm shower after 3 days was amazing.
My son came out in his 4 wheel drive and took me to his place for the day..showered, did some laundry...got home and just past my property there's still no power...I got lucky....what really sucks is going to the woods with a shovel and roll of TP when it's 25 degrees out in the morning...I don't have a generator backup system but always keep candles and water stashed in case...fortunately my wood stove has a glass door..cooked meals the last two days on the woodstove and heated water for sponge baths...a hot shower at my son's was heavenly!!!
My little 4 cylinder qtr ton truck is the worst snow vehicle ever made...you have to put a ton of ballast in the back and chain up in the slightest weather...fishtails really bad on the ice and is much better just parked....I don't mind if the world shuts down for a few days but it's so much better with water, heat and power
We've got a couple portable generators here. Got one hokey wired so I can hook it up to the water heater. We use the smaller one to run the fridge and other misc stuff. Ours are Hondas, but I bet even those 300 dollar ones at harbor freight would do it for you. Sure makes things easier here.... I don't know- we've always kinda had fun when the power goes out. Especially cooking on the wood stove. Nothing like "roughing it" at home.... Lol
My wife's Prius is actually really stable if you think of it as a snow sled....the car is also a giant entertainment center..charges cell phones, runs a laptop, etc...unfortunately, my wife drove it to work the last two nights so it didn't help me listen to Wheels or follow the play by play.....played guitar for about 18 hours through the storm...flashbacks to the good old days when that's all I had anyway
I actually really enjoyed the solitude and purity of one candle, a woodfire and a nylon string guitar.....really got some quality howling at the moon time in
I should get a generator....all my neighbors have them, I just haven't gotten around to it...still never owned a cell phone...I have a legacy to live up to!
I used to have 70 gallons of hot water on my woodstove throughout the winter in these situations but I retired those buckets...they'd seen better days and this storm reminds me....I should replace them
I've been trying to get my buddy's plumbing thawed out for a week. Finally got it thawed out today, only to discover the copper water lines are ruptured in about ten spots. Time to sweat copper in a dirt crawl space At least the spiders are gone for the winter. Mother nature is a nice lady. -25℉ here in WY tonight!
Screw that! I redid our whole house- PEX with the couplers to the copper. SO fast and easy, and I haven't had any leaks after a year or so. Not bad cost wise either.
I'm doing that 8' at a time, the slow way.....came home to a flooding bathroom last February late at night.....burst pipe...I've now replace my well pump, filter system, most of the major pipes with just a couple of the old ones left under the house...just tested all the lines and they all came up clean ..hot and cold..that was a thrill!
I've been attempting to deliver packages safely on the west side of Powell Butte the past couple days. Its been fun times.
