No, you have a very valid point. Winning should trump having tea parties in the locker room with every player taking turns complimenting each other and talking about their personal problems.

So, nothing until the off-season then...?

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Wow, a wave of Whitsitt nostalgia. I never thought I'd see the day, even though he put together the best Blazers team of the past 25 years or so.

    'Aim Low' Olshey...

He's likely targeting O'Quinn or Muscala.

If, and that's a big if, there is any truth to this, I wish to change my stance in the fire Olshey thread. Because if (and again, I meean if) this is true it means Olshey learned absolutely nothing last summer.

We went into the summer of 2016 with enough cap space to offer a max. contract. We were spurned by the top tier and even second tier free agents before finally settling on overpaying a 3rd tier guy.

Think about that. When the best you can do, when you have the ability to offer a max. contract, is the 6th best player on the 5th best team in the 2nd best conference, what kind of needle mover do you think you can land when you're over the cap, bumping up against the LT threshold and the most you can offer is the MLE?

I get that many GMs, especially Olshey, don't like to make mid-season trades because they don't want to fuck up team chemistry. Hello???? That was last year. This year the team is NOT overachieving and exceeding all expectations because they like playing together. This team is broken. We have obvious, glaring holes that need to be addressed and a horribly unbalanced roster.

Players who can help us, both short term and long term, are going to be available at the deadline. It would be negligent to not go hard after those players because you prefer to do your dealing in the off season.

As a fan of the team, I'd much rather believe Chris Haynes is the gullible one here and not Neil Olshey.

I still find Haynes story hard to believe. This is a great time to be looking for a center because most teams are set there and there are plenty of guys available at the position. Now is the time to get aggressive, not in the offseason, unless of course the plan is brook Lopez or Demarcus cousins.

Andrew Bogut (knee) hinted that his future likely isn't going to be in Dallas.

"Thankfully, I'm a free agent here, so I only have a couple of months more here and then will most likely move on," Bogut said. "I've got a valuable contract ... having four months left on my contract, I'm a valuable commodity to be moved." Bogut is a poor fit next to Dirk Nowitzki so he's willingly going to come off the bench moving forward, but it sounds like he's preparing to be dealt before the trade deadline. He will have more value on a team that isn't tanking, but he's not a great stash either. On a side note, Bogut is not on the injury report for Thursday's game vs. the Suns.

The only person and I mean only one I would trade for him is Leonard. But I wouldn't even give a 2nd rounder with it as he isn't likely to resign with us imo. Remember he makes 11 MIL so we would have to match contracts so you can't throw Napier, Project Pat and etc their way for him.

Festus is also tradeable, and theoretically desirable, since his contract is 80% paid by insurance (a la RLEC's "golden expiring"). However, trading for Bogut also puts us over the luxury tax, which I think we want to avoid.

I think Fetus would get you a better player (for us long-term, not better skills necessarily) than Bogut. And I guess you could do Meyers plus Project Pat. Although the guy might just now be starting to show something... But agreed we don't want to go into Luxury.

Even for Meyers? I don't want any of Bogut either really but I want Leonard even less. I wouldn't even consider him for anyone else though.

Yes even for Meyers. Meyers has more value than that, will not be hard to move.

Time will tell on that. I sadly think we won't even try to move him.

Disagree, I think we are very clearly showcasing both him and Noah at the moment. There is a reason Ed is getting DNP CDs.

Unfortunately, seeing him play more probably hurts Meyers' value.

I would be happy if you are right. I don't see it though. The front office has always liked him a lot more than most fans on this board. I think that is still the case. There was absolutely no reason to make him a priority over Harkless and they did. I bet he is here longer than Ed (even if that wouldn't be my plan personally).

And to be honest, Ed has arguably been just as bad or worse and I am a huge fan of his.

I agree with the first part.

Bigs with Leonards talent/shooting ability will always hold value in GMs eyes. This is a guy that can space the court and has shown flashes from time to time of being able to defend the most elite bigs (Cousins, Gasol.) Hes also young enough to where coaches will be intrigued by the idea of working with him.

NBA Trade Rumors: Here's why the Blazers aren't interested in Cousins or Noel
Don't expect Portland to make a big splash and land either of those players at the deadline

On paper, either one would be a huge help to the Blazers. Noel perhaps more so on the defensive end but adding an All-Star like Cousins would be a huge upgrade in the Portland front court. So why aren't the Blazers interested?

One reason is that the Blazers believe in their core team and that they can turn things around. This is essentially what happened with Portland last season. They struggled at the start of the season but then got in a little rhythm in January and February, which ultimately helped them secure a playoff spot.

Portland invested a lot of money in the offseason to bring back their team from last season and it seems like they are going to stick with this group. That could change as we get closer to February's trade deadline but for now, the Blazers seem focused on improving from within.
