I don't think we can speak for a father who has a daughter on how he should handle this situation. You need to have a daughter to understand which I can't fully. But I know people with daughters and they would handle it much different then what you stated. But I do have boys so I am a parent and I know there is no possible way you can control their ever moment. There are many opportunities they would have outside of the home to be exposed to this news and it could have came from friends or any other "channel" besides the actual TV or newspaper even.
