The "Normalcy" of homosexual relations isn't something factual. It's subjective, and therefore an opinion. I have mine, and you have yours, which I accept as your opinion, but not fact. That doesn't make me intolerant. I can't speak for anyone else, but based on my reading of the Bible, homosexual sex is the only aspect of homosexuality which is considered sinful. I'm fact, I've had this discussion with my wife before. She actually considers me frustratingly liberal because I think that gay person could be in a long term relationship homosexual relationship and be well within the bounds of God's morality if said relationship is asexual. Actually, you're mis-paraphrasing that verse. 1 John doesn't say you can't love if you don't know God: it says that if you don't love, you don't know God. That's an important distinction. All humans are made in God's image, so all are capable of love. Also, it's important not to conflate "Eros" (romantic) love with "agape" (Godly sacrificial) love which is spoken about in that passage.
