I like the shotgun as well. When I get the money, my next purchase will most likely be a Mossberg 590A1. In my opinion, either of these long guns would be sufficient for home defense.
I have the Mossberg 500 with interchangeable barrels. One barrel is for home protection, and the other for bird hunting. I like my weapons to be able to cover several positions, the same way I like my basketball players. I would love to own the 590A1, nice shotgun, and an excellent home protection weapon.
I sort of think of the .223 as support weapon, good for the guys that help but don't necessary shoot all that well. Mine is the Ruger Mini 14. I hear yeah with the shot gun. Mine is Mossberg 12 magnum with 24' slug barrel. Usually loaded with 00 Buck Shot. But my handy tool is the 357. Magnum Carbine. Lever action knock off of the old Winchester model 92. Holds eleven rounds of .357 or 13 .38 special. I loaded the .357 rounds for this with Win 296 powder pushing 125 jacketed Hollow points. I think the hitting power is a little better than shown above, with a velocity of about 2300 feet per second. My close quarters boat gun. No testing the hand gun laws with this way. The .270 Winchester is a long time favorite, maybe even a sniper rifle. I first acquired mine, when I was aboard Ship. It was sent to me later after I was discharged. Have had the model 99 lever action Savage .308 even longer. Well there are more but enough musing.
That's the one. I only ever use the slug barrel, although I have the others. When I did hunt birds, rather use the 20 gauge.
I hear that. I guess killing stuff loses it's appeal when your eating well enough. Never did look on it as a sport.

Nice! I have a Ruger GP100 in .357 Magnum, stainless, with a 4" barrel. I absolutely love it. I bought it new, and put some after-market Altamont grips on it. The rounds are 125 gr loads from Underwood. Very powerful rounds, with a beautiful fireball. In as far as lever action rifles go.....I have a 16" Legacy Sports International Puma M92 in .454 Casull: It puts out a 260 grain load at about 2,000-2,100 FPS, with about 2,100-2,300 ft-lbs of energy. And, depending on the load you shoot, the fireball is awesome. I fucking love it. It was a gift from my buddy Ken, who I mentioned earlier in this thread. The front sight came off (red fiber optic), and I need to find a gun smith to put it back on; this time I'll have it pinned in place. Once I get it repaired, I plan to take my first wild pig with it when I can find the land and get the license. My other guns are a 3rd Gen Glock 22, Winchester 1200 28" 12 ga, Romanian WASR 10/63 AK-47, and a Marlin M60W in .22 LR. The Winchester and Marlin I received in a trade as collateral from a co-worker of mine, who needed a firearm for duty use. I gave him my Springfield XD-45 in exchange for these two guns, and what was supposed to be cash, paid off over time. I would hold the guns as collateral until he could pay off the Springfield. I left the company though in 2007, and lost touch with him. Trust me...he got the better end of that deal. I've never fired the shotgun in the 9 years I've had it, and the Marlin isn't my type of rifle. Together, they're barely worth $250; whereas I was selling the Springfield to him for $400 or $450, IIRC. Oh well. I hope he enjoys it...if he still even has it.

On a side note, I had many wonderful school teachers over the years who were committed helping me become a successful person even though it didn't pay as much as a big corporation. Now school shootings have to be dealt with and these teachers are going to have to ask themselves if it's worth risking a horrible accident to prevent the less likely but increasingly real risk of a mass shooting. Or quit altogether I suppose. That career never gets easier and most of them don't get the acknowledgement they deserve.
