    Friday.

I don't think Obama's been a good president. We have track record to go on.

Trump has only a little track record and that's a handful of deals to build plants and hire people in the US. So far, so very good.

Correction.....he has a handful of proposed deals. Nothing set in stone yet. You're being a bit premature. And by your "track record" scorecard, who has been a "good" president in the past few decades......? And please don't say Reagan. That senile old fool is the one who got our country rolling down the path to our current sad state of affairs.....

You tell me who has been a "good" president in the past few decades. And please don't say Clinton, Carter, or Obama.

    Geez.

well.....that says it all....sorry to be rude but Obama hands down and probably just because McGovern lost the election long ago....before Obama I was most excited about the possibility of McGovern as the great one....didn't happen. I was overseas for the entire Clinton era so I have a more detached view of his presidency..I'll throw JFK in the mix because he tried to stop the Viet Nam war at least and the Cuban crisis...unfortunately he didn't get to the final buzzer...I think Bobby Kennedy would have been a great one. ...I trusted Ike but was so young then and thought a president could do no wrong.

Sorry, but asking me to choose a good president and saying "but don't say X" isn't much of a question.

I liked Reagan. I liked Clinton.

Reagan turned around a horrible economy that was several years in decline, ended the cold war, kept us out of war except a few really minor skirmishes.

Clinton shrank government through attrition and signed balanced budgets passed by the republicans. Aside from his presidency being scandal ridden and his impeachment, his only real failures were not recognizing the stock market bubble of his making and he failed to get Bin Laden. He did hand W a massive stock market crash and a recession.

Carter is the guy who nearly ruined the country. Decimated the military, made us a laughing stock internationally, on the road to being a 3rd world nation in terms of debt, interest rates, inflation, and unemployment. His only success was peace between Egypt and Israel (at the expensive of $billions in weapons to both sides every year since). His biggest failure was the creation of Iran as the state we now know it - huge sponsor of terrorist organizations.

EDIT: I wanted McGovern to win, too. And Carter the 1st time. Then I wised up.

Well.....I asked you first but...as much as it pains me to say it, Bush the first was far better than I expected, if only because he put a leash on Cheney and Rumsfeld and was smart enough to stop at the Kuwait/Iraq border. Which probably cost him a second term. Johnson had it all until he doubled down with both the Great Society and the escalation of the Vietnam War. He should have put all his chips on the former. His legacy would have been unimpeachable. So, in my book (with the limitations you imposed) the last good president was Eisenhower.

I think during Truman and Eisenhower's eras most americans blindly trusted our leaders to be great men because they were president....somewhere along the way, that changed..reading about Ike later on in life I realized he wasn't an impressive president, but was a seemingly honest one

I think the point Riverman is making is that, while Donald Trump and his supporters were victorious in winning the election that doesn't mean it will be a victorious presidency or a victory for the American people... that remains to be seen. But for all our sakes, I hope it's a victorious presidency for Donald Trump because then we all win and I will eat crow with relish.

I've said many times that respect is earned by demonstrable example and so far we've had a couple of years of talking heads making promises.....Trump has earned only disrespect from me and he could turn it around and earn my respect...I'll say that much. (not holding my breath) I think it's the team around him that will be the identity more than him...he seems to want to get people to help him and that's good, I don't think he wants to really work much...they'll do the work and he'll get the credit and compliment himself on twitter...that's my prediction.

Fortunately we're as far "out of side/out of mind" from Washington DC as you can get up here in Oregon. They really don't notice us that much (outside of the rioting) and we can eat our crow omelets cooked in marijuana infused oil and wash it down with some of the finest microbrew beer and pinot noir in the world. I think it's going to be a long and strange trip! :smiley-calista:

Not a bad man, just not so bright. I have posted my thoughts on D-day in here before so no need again. But our battle over Formosa (Taiwan) that Ike held to mystified me.
You have been there, the natives hated us, hated the Mainlanders occupying the island. I didn't mine the trouble between them, but shit, they were throwing rocks at me!
We patrolled that sea for years, shot at, planes knocked down, all kind a bad shit. Then we give it all up and now we reevaluate again. Well so be it, but damn, there was no great leadership by Ike!
