It is currently Thursday the 8th on the east coast in the United States, your opening round matchup will start tonight at midnight, and end next Thursday at midnight. Topic: Which team is the best in the league this year, and why are they the best team in the league this year?

BCB, you do this every time you get into a debate. I don't think I have ever seen you make a response in any contest we've had.

Memphis fan left it wide open with a sentence. You could have wrote 2 sentences and won.

I'll PM him right away. Or maybe Wright/Noah? Hmmm...

The debate question has now been changed. The new question is who you would pick with the 1st overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, between Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. I will be defending the picking of Kevin Durant and Memphis Fan will be defending the picking of Greg OdenKevin Durant's SizeKevin Durant is currently 6'10" and is around 225 pounds, not to mention a 7'5" arm-span. Many people don't know that he's a year younger than the people in his class and that he's still growing. He came into Texas over the summer at 190-200 pounds, the guy has put amazing work into his body in a short period of time and considering his frame he could put on another 20. You could be drafting a 6'11" 240 pound Dirk Nowitzki with guard skills. Yeah. Kevin Durant's SkillsKevin Durant is not only a freak in terms of size but he has amazing skills. When I first heard of Durant almost 3 years ago, he was extremely raw and besides being an athlete and able to shoot the ball..he couldn't do much else. In the last two years it's been simply remarkable the how he's improved. Right now he's shooting 48% from the floor, 39% from three and 79% from the FT line. He has perfect jump-shooting form, for a young guy his shooting is off the charts good. He's putting up 25/11 a game and blocking shots like Josh Smith. Kevin Durant has range past the 3PT line, can hit the jumper from anywhere on the court, he can put his back to the basket like a Carmelo Anthony and sink the turnaround and not only that but post a guy up, he has good footwork in the post and scores down low as well. Bottom line, he's a threat to score from anywhere at all times. For a guy his size he has a great first step, he can easily get past his defender and take it to the basket. But not only can he score from anywhere, but he great passing and court vision. This is what sets him apart from most players. Like Kobe Bryant, Durant is an above average passer for a wing player. He can pass off the fast break, pass out of double teams and post effectively. He makes good decisions with the ball. Not only can he shoot, score, pass...but he also has a good handle. This used to be a weakness but now it's one of his strengths. All you have to do is watch his games to see the improvement. Did I mention Durant is averaging 11 rebounds a game? He's not only one the best scorers in college basketball but one of the games best rebounders. In the NBA you have to rebound, even at SF, he's proving he could be an 7-8rpg guy at the NBA level because he can box out and has a very quick jump on rebounds. Kevin Durant's LeadershipKevin Durant's leadership and passiveness were often a hit for him in scouting reports in high school. It was a problem I had with him, but all that changed when he started to play college basketball. How many elite prospects come in, take a young team on their back and ask for the ball at the end of games? Look around college basketball. Greg Oden doesn't do it, Julian Wright doesn't do it, Spencer Hawes doesn't do it. Kevin Durant has taken a team with 3 upperclassmen and has turned Texas from a team that nobody thought would do anything...and has turned them into a team Big 12 teams dread playing. You want to see leadership and balls, take a look at the Texas and Oklahoma State game. Durant thrives in end of the game situations, not many freshman, let alone freshman as young as him do that. When has Greg Oden demanded the ball late in games? Taken his team on his back? I don't remember one.Kevin Durant's future/improvements/questions.There a lot of things some critics say about Kevin Durant. He's too skinny for the NBA. I believe Tracy McGrady came into the NBA at around 200 pounds, and he eventually filled out and he's perfectly fine. Considering the work Durant's already put into his body, it won't be an issue. What position will be play? Durant often times plays out of position at Texas because they don't have any experienced post players. But he's a natural SF. Could he play PF in the NBA? At 6'10" 240 pounds he definitely could, this is not a bad problem to have. Durant could play SG in the NBA, will play SF in the NBA and probably will play some PF in the NBA (much like Josh Smith does). Kevin Durant doesn't play defense. My question is, how many college freshman do play defense? Not many elite guard/wing prospects come into college and play great defense. Defense has been a struggle in college so far, adapting to playing defense against bigger players and playing post defense has been a struggle. He knows this is an issue and he will no doubt work hard on it. He is 6'10", 7'5" arm-spam and has a great work ethic, the defensive issue will be solved in time. Why doesn't Kevin Durant block more shots? Durant's averaging just about 2bpg, which isn't bad, it's just not as much as an athlete like him can do. I don't think this is an issue at all really, blocking shots is risky business and can lead to fouls. Durant can play in the post but he isn't a true post player, blocking shots probably doesn't come to him as naturally as Greg Oden. Considering Durant everything to his team, it's probably a good thing he isn't trying to swat everything near him and getting fouls, although he does have huge games where he blocks 5+ shots. Greg Oden and his flaws. We all know who Greg Oden is, the 7'1" 250 pound orangutan from Ohio State. Everyone simply has him pegged into the #1 spot. Why? Because he's huge and has potential. Oden is mentioned as being a 'once a decade center'. But didn't all those dominant centers of the past actually dominate college basketball? Akeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Shaquille O'Neal, Patrick Ewing/Dikembe Mutombo....All those guys took their teams on their back and dominated the game like Durant is doing now. Kevin Durant is the unquestioned leader of his team, where is Greg Oden during crunchtime of games? From what I've seen he's not demanding the ball like a great center, playing consistantly on offense or scoring when it counts. Hell, in Ohio States first 7 games without Greg Oden the Buckeyes won 6/7 games (the 6 wins being blowouts and the only loss was at UNC). Kevin Durant, the obvious choice in summaryKevin Durant is your choice if you want a 6'10" 230+ pound player that can: shoot from anywhere, score in the post, pass the ball, handle the ball, run the floor, block shots, rebound the ball and take big time shots. Imagine what this guy can do, with his size, skills and him being almost a year younger than the players in his class. If you want a bigman that doesn't want to take the big shot, put his team on his back or play consistantly, thats your choice. Kevin Durant isn't the next (insert name) or 'KD', he's Kevin Durant and he's going to be out of this world amazing at the NBA level and he's proving it everytime he hits the floor in Texas. And thats who I'd pick first in this years draft.
