The mayor of Las Vegas said yesterday that he will approach the idea of bringing a team to Vegas. He said its a great city, and the only thing they are missing is a sports franchise. He also said the betting is a good thing for the city. These are my thoughtsros: This can seriously be a gold mine for the NBA. No one here can deny that Vegas team, would have arguably the best sales in the NBA. The arena will be a hotspot for tourists and money will definetely be a problem for the franchise is Vegas. Cons: The betting. I really think we are going to have some real scandals/real lawsuits if this happens. However, the city approves it and acknowledges it as a good thing. My thoughts are that if they do make it illegal to bet, its going to be even harder to control this. My idea, is that if nothing goes wrong for like a year or so, Las Vegas should be a permanent residence for a sports team.
Stern has already told the mayor that if he can reach an agreement with casinos about betting on the NBA in some fashion, he would definitely consider putting a franchise in Vegas. From what I've read Stern is about as willing to put a franchise in Vegas as he's ever been, even if gambling on the NBA is still permitted. The bigger thing that I think people are missing are the behavioral issues that would come up if there was an NBA team in Vegas. Stern already is trying to reduce the number of off court problems that players get into, and having players in Vegas all season long would almost guarantee that there will be some kind of high-profile incident. I am really expecting something like that out of this weekend, but I guess we'll see.If Vegas does get a franchise though, I hope the NBA just relocates one of the current teams instead of expanding again. We already have 30 teams, and I think that is more than enough.

They can't say that even if it's the way they feel because then they would barely get any attendance until they made the move.

Its easy to dump a 50K fine on a player, but to control gambling around las Vegas, its like controlling Dogs running after cats.
I don't understand the big deal about the gambling. It's professional sports, so of course people will bet on it. Is everyone afraid of games being fixed? If a player ever did try to throw a game and got caught he'd be blackballed and fined heavily so it'd never be worth it. It's not like these guys are poor college kids. Behavior issues? NBA players are all adults. If they want to behave like idiots then just fine/suspend the crap out of them and it'll stop. Vegas is a perfect place for the Kings to move. It'd be a great attraction and would make tons of money. They'd also have no problem getting a new arena as some casino tycoon would finance it.
People are saying Memphis....but we have a lease for the next 6 yrs or something....I think we the NBA might start another fanchise(s), ive heard that theres a possibility Mexico will get a team. But Im not too sure if Las Vegas can bring a steady income unless they are really good....cause alotve people in Vegas are visiting..its a tourist city, not too sure how many of the locals will actually go. Expanding a team will also make the NBA regroup the league slighty, meaning the Griz and Hornets will(or should) be in the Eastern Conference.
The NBA doesn't really care if the every day joe bets on basketball, what they don't want to see if players, coaches, owners ect better on teams and doing things like point shaving. or like what Pete Rose did in baseball, bet against his own team. the NBA wants the fairest compitition availble, and having one team constantly throwing games to make more money deteriates the league as a whole.A lot of people forget that Las Vegas almost got in a team in 84. the Jazz were in dispare in Utah and were considering moving to Vagas, Minneapolis, or Miami. the League, and new commisioner David Stern opposed this because they felt Vegas was to corrupt to legitimize play. Granted a lot of things have changed in 20 years, but Vegas still has a reputation as being sin city. if the league wants a team near Vegas, but doesn't want to deal with the gambling issues they could put one in one of the larger cities around Vegas. cities like Kingman, Arizona, Misquite, Nevada, St George,Utah, Barstow, California; would all draw from the Las Vegas market, but wouldn't have nearly the corruption and problems of Vegas. Even a combination of those cities and Vegas, where the team plays a certain number of games in each city would likely aleaviate the problem somewhat.
I really think that having a team in Vegas could bring the NBA to a new level. Betting on the games would be fine as long as it totally wouldnt get out of control. The fan base could have the possibilites of being crazy. So many people visit there, and this would just give people another thing to do. I think that it would be great for the league personally, and I would be interested in watching this team play.
A team in Vegas would definetley be a good idea. For those of you who don't think it would be: be prepared to be surprised. Vegas is a big city with no proffesional sports teams. The MLB and NFL have both resisted the idea of having a franchise in Vegas so if the NBA were to build a franchise there it would defientley be very successful. The Maloof brothers seem very interested in having a franchise there so it could definetley happen soon with their help. This seems like a very good idea, I hope it gets accomplished soon.
They need a team there it be great don't see a problem at all. Stern can make a problem out of every little thing though. lol
how about the vegas magic florida has its team in the heat or the vegas clippers or the vegas queens cuoph couph I mean kings
Well, after watching that Stern interview yesterday, I think he brings up a very good point. Is the team there REALLY going to make money? Assuming that it is an expansion franchise, we know that it will probably suck for at least five years, maybe more. And on the nights that they are playing other horrible teams would the "fans" and tourists really want to see two horrible teams play each other when they have so many other options in the entertainment capital of the world? Probably not. But, let's say the Maloofs moved the Kings to Vegas, I really don't think they would have that big of a problem with it since that team is at least respectable and decent. Stern has really thought it out, as usual. But, like he said... the ball is in the mayor's court.
