Just read this paragraph in the Columbia River Pilot about Portland. "Destructive storms are infrequent in the Portland area. Surface winds seldom exceed gale force, and only once in the period of record have winds reached higher than 65 knots; October 1967..." Anyone know what is not right about this?
Yep. Locally, known as the Columbus Day storm. Government pub. No way known to man, how to get these things corrected.
I read a book about Lewis and Clark and I believe there was mention of a windstorm back then that flattened most of the Pacific Northwest...don't have the details but apparently it didn't stop raining for a long, long time after. I think it was Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose if not mistaken
