I agree. I get tired of the "everyone is racist to some extent" bullshit, too (even though I've said it). We all have fears, and they can be based on anything no matter how small or real, big or imagined. And we've all acted upon them at some time or another.

I don't feel like I should have to apologize for history and what those before me have done. That being said, I can't deny that I have a good life, better than many in this world, better than many in this country. Even those worse off here in the US, they still likely have it better than most on this planet. But as they say, "mo' money, mo' problems". I don't doubt there are people living with less that are happier.

The perception of white privilege was undoubtedly started by President Obama. I had high hopes for him when he became President because of what I perceived he could do to make situations better. Poor expectations to be sure about what was going to happen with my healthcare, but hope on other fronts.

Then we saw the incident in Cambridge with the Police and the Black Professor Gates. Obama then proceeded to dash all hope he was wise enough to be helpful on any front. Instead of using the incident as a teaching moment, he came down on the police like Bigfoot ready to crush the puny.

If a cop were checking my house, protecting my property, I would profusely thank the officer for his assistance, but this professor chose to be offended. I can not know why Obama could not see
the moment to change some attitudes, but he did not, and so went his Presidency.

Now I know, many if not most in this forum, will disagree with me. In their eyes the only issue that needs correcting is the Police, who are always wrong.

But, 50 years from now when my great grand children are thanking the Police profusely for any protection they may receive, and the great grand children of Professor Gates and Barrack Obama
are ripping a policeman's ass for showing up, which group of descendants will need the attitude adjustment?

Personally, I NEVER even HEARD the term "White Privilege" until Obama's tenure in office. Never heard it under Bush Jr, Clinton, or Bush Sr.

Nope. Just popped up under Obama. And that can't be a coincidence.

 

How so? Whites, men, and straight people generally have it better than anyone else. I mean men get paid more. Straight people don't have to fight for the right to marry or other basic human rights. They've had them since birth. And for all the progress, we still have what, the 44th straight white male President in 45 tries?
