So at what point do you think a team becomes too talented, and starts to hurt themselves because of that? You guys think there are any teams like this in the NBA, that are too talented for their own good, right now? I think a team becomes too talented when they have too many players who need the ball in their hands to be good players. I personally can't think of an example at the moment, but there defintely have been teams, recently and in the past, that have been great examples of this. Maybe the '04 Lakers with Shaq, Kobe, GP and Malone? They lost in the Finals (the West wasn't as strong that year as it has been as recently as the last 2-3) to a Detroit team that thrived off chemistry and teamwork more than just raw talent thananyone else in recent memory.
I don't think you can ever have too much talent - the All Star game was a showing of the leagues most talented players - and it was just a regular game. I would bet if the players played seriously, and made set plays and etc - they would be very successful. There is no such thing as too much talent - it's how you use the talent - this is what distinguishes a successful team and a failing team. I think the Celtics could fall into the group that there is tons of talent on their team - but the players are all younger guys who need to focus that talent into one collective winning force.
I think you can have too many younger talents and it can really hurt chemistry. You have teams like Boston and the Clippers from 3 years ago, stacked with tons of young guys all fighting for playing time...it just doesn't work, you have to have a balence. I like the Celtics young players but I just don't think that situation will ever work out unless they deal for veterans. You need a mix of young and old to make things work. Look at the Mavericks, loaded with talent, you can never have too much unless the talent is too young. THe Mavericks have a great balence, Terry/Dirk/Dampier/Stackhouse in their primes and Harris/Diop/Howard coming up the ranks...I love how that team is put together.
last years Knicks before everybody realized Stephon and Stevie Franchise aren't that talented at all really....
I don't think excess talent will ever hurt a team. What kills a team with excess talent is the egos those players possess and their inability to take a second seat to another (see the 04 Lakers).

I mean, anyone who knows one thing about basketballl know they are TALENTED. Whether they always play as a team, always have great games, etc. is one thing. But to tell me they aren't talented...you gotta be f*cking kidding me.
In a way the Nuggets are right now. I still think they can work out the Carmelo/Iverson thing but right now it does not seem to have helped them all that much. The Knicks are another case. They have a heckuva lot of talent but they haven't been able to put it together, they're making strides this year though.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (playaofthegame @ Feb 20 2007, 07:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>obviously they're talented but they obviously aren't that good anymore</div>But, MardyC is right. You DID, in fact, say they are not <u>talented</u>. That is VERY wrong. They have always had loads of talent, they just never used it correctly. If Marbury really wanted to, he could have been one of the top PG's in the NBA like he thinks he is. Francis was an All-Star a few years ago, then he lost his boyfriend (Cuttino Mobley) and it all went down hill from there. Even then, he never took advantage of how talented he really was in Houston or Orlando. If he had been more of a team player and focused more on running an offense and playing within the flow of the game, rather than trying to be Hot Sauce out there, he could have been REALLY good as well. It's a shame when guys like that waste their talent and abilities. On topic, I don't necessarily believe there is such thing as "too much talent." I think their can be too many ego's, but not too much talent. It depends on who you have on your team, to be honest. Some guys are willing to adjust and decrease their role to win, some guys still want their touches. It depends on the situation.

The team relied on Yao's consitency so much, that never realized T Mac has the skills to carry a team. I thought that both had too much talent to be both running plays for each player respectively. I thought it would be better for T Mac to be the dominant first option, and Yao become dominant on the glass.
