Trading Meyers is not about gaining, it is about saving what we have. A pure business decision. Without going into all of the boring salary cap details, the short version is. If you want to re-sign Vurkic and Vonley, then we need to dump salaries. OR pay a ship load full of luxury tax, which PA has said he is not in favor of doing. As it stands now, just signing our first round picks this summer will probably push us into the luxury tax.
Agreed, but I'd add... Everyone, Biebs included, will expect $10 mil players to get PT. If we become the team I hope we do, he'll get none. If he's still on the roster, it'll hurt team chemistry. Assuming we're keeping Vonleh and Nurk, we don't get to keep Biebs, Crabbe, and ET (for luxury tax reasons). My guess is that we have to dump 2 of them taking back only a fraction of their actual salaries. Likely, this means trading both Crabbe and Biebs. All should keep in mind that CJ's salary is going from $3 mil this year to $24 mil next year, and that we were only $30,000 under the cap THIS year.
It might be saving Paul Allen a truck load of dough though. Resigning Nurkic in 18-19 will put us over the luxury tax, guaranteed.
Brooklyn would probably take him for free. Or at least trade Crabbe out with Leonard to Brooklyn and get someone like Kilpatrick back to replace Crabbe and save $26M a year in the process.
I'm down for Rubio only if we can get rid of Turner, or get a legit stretch 4 and stretch 5 off the bench, which would mean no Okafor. Rubio + Turner playing together would be a trainwreck unless you have 3 legit shooters around them. But if you have a bench unit of Rubio, Turner, and Okafor, you literally have 3 players that need to ball to be effective, and none of them are good shooters from anywhere except for right at the rim. It'd be a spacing nightmare. Rubio and Turner's defenders would collapse hard on Okafor, leading to many poor shots from Okafor, or kickouts to awful shooters in Turner and Rubio. Okafor would be a huge negative with those 2. Rubio and Turner are also average defenders, while Okafor is an awful defender. So not only would the offense be jacked up, but we'd probably struggle defensively too. Don't do it Neil.
Once Crabbe's restriction is done I wouldn't be opposed to trading Crabbe+Leonard (and rights to Diez) to Brooklyn for Joe Harris+Trevor Booker.
I can see trading Crabbe to like the Nets because he has value that they want. But how the hell are we going to trade Turner and Beibs in anything other but a salary dump with another team? We aren't SA who can just get former employees to take our past mistakes.... Meyers we might be able to get another team to take him if we attach a pick though.
Or we could attach Meyers with Crabbe in a Brooklyn trade. Just say "If you want Crabbe, take Meyers too". If not, organize a 3 way trade with Crabbe going to Brooklyn for one of the Nets late 1sts, and send that 1st to another team to take Turner or Meyers.
No. It'd be dumping players to add players. To be more exact, it'd be dumping players to get cap space to sign better players that fit. For example, James Johnson won't make more than $12-$14M, and would be way more valuable than Turner, Leonard, or even Crabbe. In any possible deal with Brooklyn you could get back Kilpatrick and his $1M contract. He could fill the role of a departing Crabbe or Turner at $15M+ cheaper per year. It's not just dumping players to dump players.
I'm afraid Nurkic has to be maxed too. I don't think they would trade RoCo, his contract is nothing. They get a legit player for free.
I don't think anyone that says to get rid of Crabbe would say so if he was making 5M. 3rd or 1st or whatever from 3 the fact is we cannot afford both him and Turner so just talking about his "stats" doesn't really mean anything. And when we pay another 80(at least-I think more) to Nurkic next year the problem will be huge. I wish we could keep everyone and sign even more players, but this is not realistic so anyone that says get rid of Crabbe doesn't have to justify himself and answer questions on how you replace his 3%. It's just a realistic approach and Joe Harris is not that worse a shooter for example. If NO says we don't have a prob to pay lux tax for 3-4 years in a row then ok, keep them, I'm happy.
I can't see how we can keep Crabbe and Turner, one has to go. Trade the one you can get the best return on.
What do we think about Mudiay from Denver? I haven't seen a lot of him, but he was highly rated coming into the league, maybe another Denver (gold) nugget ripe for the mining!?
