Would you say Tim Duncan has been the best player in the last 5 years? This also includes the Shaq of LA and every great player since 02. Since he came in the league has been averaging 20 points a game except for last season, which is acceptable since he was troubled by injuries. He does everything well and steps up for his team, hes not the most exciting, flashy player in the league but he wins and brings championships.Unlike Shaq, there is never trouble with Duncan, he never complains about his teamates or says he is better then anyone else, he just plays his game and wins. If you are going to say Kobe has been the best player, ask yourself if in the last 5 years in total he has really been the best.
In the last 2 years Kobe Bryant has been the best. Tim Duncan is in no way the best player the last 5 years. I will take Shaq, Garnett, and Kobe over him.
Well he's certainly been one of the most successful players of the past 5 years. When it's all said and done I think Duncan may go down as the best Power Forward to ever play the game. Not saying he IS the best, but at least one of the best and probably the most accomplished.
interesting question. Duncan has just been so steady that its really hard to notice him, hes done the same things for so long you just expect it from him. I might have to say he has been the best player for the past five years, he's done everything which he should have to earn such an accredidation, he's won titles, won MVPs, been a solid defender. he may not score 30 a game, but its hard to argue with the results the Spurs have night in night out.
I think when you're talking about the best player in the NBA, it's gotta be someone like Duncan. The best player and leader on the best team is basically the guy you're looking for, especially since Duncan is on a team like the Spurs, who don't have that many huge stars, and it's kind of just Duncan with Parker and Manu with a bunch of solid role players. Duncan is most definitely top 2 though, if not the best. He's simply one of the best of our time. Some people don't like him because he's not flashy and boring to watch, but he's one of the few purists left, he plays the game the right way. The guy needs to be given more respect. Most people don't know how great he actually is.
Yeah his game is so subtle that he probably doesn't get all the 'best player' recognition he deserves. But the dude is consistently good and he wins.Could definitely make an argument for him.
If you said from '98-03, I'd maybe go w/ Duncan, but the past 5 years??? No way...Here's a list of better players:Kobe BryantShaqKevin GarnettShawn MarionDirk NowitzkiPaul PierceTracy McGradySteve Nash (top offenses in both Dallas & PHX)Yes, Duncan would be on this list too, but he certainly is not the top player by any means.

You want to say Kobe and Shaq then fine, I can give you that, although I'd argue that they had each other and won 2 titles the past 5 years while Duncan never had anyone as talented running with him besides a declining David Robinson. The rest however are impossible to make an argument for. You have Nowitski and Nash, both of whom were on stacked Mavs teams and never won a title while Duncan has won 2. Kevin Garnett has never won anything and barely had any playoff success, and the same is true of Tracy McGrady, and as much as I hate to say it, Paul Pierce. Shawn Marion being listed is must be a joke because he's never even been the best player on his own team. So please, give Duncan the respect he deserves.
Tim Duncan is cleary the best player in general the past 5 seasons. Apparently winning 2 NBA Championships, leading his team to more wins than another player the last 5 years, averaging 21/12 and being the games best pure post player, one of the best post defenders to ever play the game....is not enough for some people. I'm not going to waste my time addressing the ignorance of that Kobe fan and Suns fan, they clearly have not got a clue as to what they are talking about. Give me a freaking break. I would also like to point out that LA has not won a title the last 5 years, those titles were won before the time this thread specifies. (6 seasons ago).
I would say duncan has been the best in the past 5 years pretty easily actually. Players have been better at times, but no1 has been more consistantly dominant over the years. Gimme duncan

I dont think that Duncan is the best, but he is definitely top 3. Shawn Marion????? If you arent kidding, I dont know what to say. Shawn Marion has been the 3rd option on his team for the last 3 years. If he was on the Spurs roster instead of Duncan, they would be a #6 or #7 team in the West....Theres nothing else I can say. That is such a joke. Paul Pierce? His team hasn't been good in 3 years, and even if they were a consistent playoff team over the last 5, he still wouldnt be better than him. Tracy??? He has been injured for alot of the year in 2 of them, and he hasnt done anything in the playoffs. His teams (besides this year) have almost always been bad. What a terrible person to say. And Dirk Nowtizki? Tim Duncan has led his team to 2 championships in the last 5 years, and Dirk has led his team to zero. Dirk has had just as much talent as Duncan, but hasnt gotten over the hump. Dirk MIGHT be better than Duncan this year, but thats about it. Nash has had great numbers, but he hasnt led his team to the finals, and he definitely has had more talent than Duncan who has won 2 Championships. The ONLY people that MIGHT be above Duncan are KG, Shaq, and Kobe. I wouldnt even put KG above him becasue Duncan has accomplished so much more, and Shaq has been definitely worse in the last 2 years. If it was over the last 8 years, Shaq would definatey be the best, but since its over the last 5, give me Duncan. And as for Kobe, IMO, he has been the best player in the league the last 2, and he has gotten a ring in the last 5. It is a close call to me....He is such a great player.

He's counting this season, last season with the Heat winning the title, before that the Spurs, before that the Pistons, then again with the Spurs...thats the last five seasons...the Lakers are out of it by 1 season. Oh, and Ballerman, don't waste your time debating someone like that...yikes.

Shawn Marion? :HAHAHA:The last 5 years? I will give it to Duncan. 2 championships, and absolutely amazing work in the post. The past 2 years, Duncan is definately not the best though. I would give that to Kobe, and then Lebron and DWade.
I'd say he's top 3 AT LEAST in the past 5 years and the best PF-all timeIn his career he's never averaged less than double digits in rebounds and he's the best fundamentally sound player in the leagueIt's funny because everybody says he's coming out of his prime (I agree partially because he used to be way more dominant) but he's still averaging 20-10 which is the goal many players work to I'll say the biggest competition in the last 5 years to Duncan would be Kobe, Dirk or KG..but besides Kobe..KG and Dirk haven't won titles..
