NFL.com - The 49ers have signed CB Nate Clements to the biggest contract ever given to a defensive player -- eight years, $80 million, including $22 million guaranteed. [READ] Nate Clements is a top 5 NFL cornerback, good CB's are rare in the NFL but I considering how many rules WR's have on their side I don't think cornerback is something you throw $80 million dollars at. My lord thats a lot of money...Hopefully the 49ers are smart and don't blow too much this offseason even though they have a lot of cap...FA is not how you build an NFL team and the 49ers have big holes all over the place.
That was quick. Nate Clements made it clear he wanted to be the highest paid cornerback in the NFL this offseason and I wasn't sure if he'd get his wish, but highest paid defensive player, wow. Just shows you how scarce the cornerback position is. Definitely a questionable move by the 49ers. I know they had an incredible amount of money to spend this offseason, but like BCB said they have a lot of holes and building through Free Agency just doesn't work these days, you have to do it through the draft.
Wow 80 mil? I knew Clements was good, but I guess the Niners really needed a corner and were willing to over pay. 80 mil is a lot. If I owned a team the only guys I would pay 80 mil are Manning and Brady. That's about it. Nothing against Clements, he's a great corner, but I don't think he's worth the 80 mil they're gonna pay him.
It is alot of money for the NFL, but hey; the 49ers need to improve their defense. Nate Clements is a complete stud at CB, and the 49ers have a great shot at a wildcard if Alex Smith continues to improve.
It's too much. Was hoping my Rams would get him, but I don't think any one defensive player is worth that price. With that said, have fun trying to cover Holt.
