Political data gathered on more than 198 million US citizens was exposed this month after a marketing firm contracted by the Republican National Committee stored internal documents on a publicly accessible Amazon server.

The data leak contains a wealth of personal information on roughly 61 percent of the US population. Along with home addresses, birthdates, and phone numbers, the records include advanced sentiment analyses used by political groups to predict where individual voters fall on hot-button issues such as gun ownership, stem cell research, and the right to abortion, as well as suspected religious affiliation and ethnicity. The data was amassed from a variety of sources—from the banned subreddit r/fatpeoplehate to American Crossroads, the super PAC co-founded by former White House strategist Karl Rove.

Deep Root Analytics, a conservative data firm that identifies audiences for political ads, confirmed ownership of the data to Gizmodo on Friday.

Don't know why they'd go to all that trouble when I'm listed in the phone book...they can just look up my phone number

They're free to call my cell number, I guess. I just scream incoherently into it until they hang up.

When I get a call from someone I don't know who asks if I'm.....(my first name) I usually say...I'll be glad to talk with you but since you have my name and home phone number I'll require your full name, home address, phone number and social security number...once I've verified this info I'll call you back....two seconds later...click...dial tone

Why would the GOP want to leak this?

It was likely just a breech to a firewall or something somewhere, as what happens when there's lax or non-updated security in place. But that wouldn't fit someone's narrative of the GOP being a bunch of assholes, so they have to spin it as a "leak", instead of just a breech of security.

The title clearly states accidently leak. No one is trying to spin anything.

Oh. I didn't see that part.

But...wouldn't a leak imply that someone actually purposely leaked something? That's what I take from the term "leak".

Otherwise, it seems more like a breech of security to me.

    :dunno:

The less you say, the better, and never say "yes" on those kinds of calls. They record you and can do all kinds of nasty things with snippets of what you said.

    Accuracy in thread titles.

    From the OP link:

So far, Deep Root doesn’t believe its proprietary data was accessed by any malicious third parties during the 12 days that the data was exposed on the open web.

    http://thehill.com/policy/cybersecu...ters-left-exposed-to-the-internet-by-rnc-data

Anyone who knew the files' web address could have accessed them. But without that knowledge, they are much harder to find. Even armed with a search for unsecured databases, finding exposures of any magnitude is tough work. Vickery sifts through a large number of unsecured databases to find ones that interesting enough to publish research.

but seriously, i need to see a link about how this happened to the democrats before, but worse, and for dumber reasons. that will be the only way to properly put this fake non story in perspective.

The roof has a leak. The dam is leaking. The faucet is leaky.

    Those don't seem on purpose.

I took a leak, on the other hand - pretty much intentional.
