I've always hated Plumbing ever since being 14 and needing to clean the bathroom sink of buildup. Now I'm twice that and still find plumbing infuriating. I was informed of a leak under the sink Sunday night. I found where the leak was and replaced the pipe. As well as added a T due to original poke for the ice maker being absolute garbage. Now I can't get the fitting to stop leaking. It has an o-ring, you can see the plumbers tape. However the nut with the scratches won't stop leaking out the top. Everything else isn't leaking except that damn spot. I guess I'll try goop next but fuck. Plumbing has to be the worst shit ever.
How much teflon tape are you using? Only wrap once, looks like in your picture you mummified it. See if the fittings will screw together and not leak without the tape.
1. Locate main water shut-off valve for house, and close it. 2. Dig hole in backyard. 3. [Optional] Cut circular hole in board and mount 18" above hole in ground. barfo
I do not, I was using hand + pliers + vice grips. It's scratched because before I took it off and figured out exactly how deep the nut would go on the threads I tried to tighten it all the way down. It naturally didn't move any further than it would allow no matter how hard I tried to tighten it. Yeah, that attempt I did wrap it three or four times. I've tried it without the tape, and with a single wrap.(clockwise) I'm starting to believe the fitting isn't exactly perfect, or goop is my only option. Hate plumbing.
Also you don't use teflon tape on brass to brass. I see your one fitting says copper on it but it looks brass.
It only looks that way due to the tape not being perfect in the picture. I assure you, it's not cross threaded.
Go to Harbor Freight and buy a couple of plumbers wrenches. You can't get the leverage you need to screw the bitches together.
Get one long(longer handle) get one shorter handle. Longer handle is for leverage, shorter handle is for bracing. Normally you won't have the space for two long handled pipe wrenches.
Find a garage sale this summer of some old dude who died and the family selling off his tools that took a lifetime to collect. Old pipe wrenches are gifts from god. The Harbor Freight ones will do what you need but they're cheap pot metal.
If you want to have fun with plumbing learn how to sweat copper. It's easy, fun, and shit stays connected. Anyone sweat their own copper. The bread trick fucking works every time!
Instead of getting these. I went out to my shop and put the fitting in my vice. Got it another turn and a half tighter.(with more scratches) I went without the plumbers tape(only was using it b/c was told to) and it seems to be holding. We'll see when I run the dish washer in a bit. But I assume if it was going to leak, I would assume it would leak as soon as I turned the valve back on. But this is plumbing and is completely illogical to me. So who knows.
I tell ya, man, looking at that mess of different material, looks like an invitation for dry rot. My first reaction wat to tell him to go get some copper and get rid of that mess...hahaha, but then again, if he hates plumbing now, imagine having to learn how to sweat a joint....ohhh, evil
cool beans, HC. Next step, go to the fridge and grab a beer. You have to, I have never seen a plumber that did not imbibe after a job.
He just said he has a bench vice. Watch a couple of youtube videos, put a piece of a pipe in that and practice putting a couple of fittings on. Very fun, very easy, very manly! FIRE! BURN! MELT! CONNECT!
I was going to suggest a bench vice but I figured I wouldn't mention it since you were using pliers. A good bench vice is another thing to keep a look out for at garage sales.
I grabbed a Gatorade, unfortunately I don't drink alcohol very often. Last time was... 3 years ago at my cousins wedding. Maybe this is why I don't like plumbing? lol
