Not that Paul is the answer here, but we have the pieces to do something similar for someone. Hopefully we can find a piece to stay relevant.....or really just be relevant

Really? Damn! BOS keeps doing this! We need to figure out a way to trade Aminu, Davis, Crabbe, Turner, and Meyers for future draft picks...

Let's not forget they also traded for Scottie Pippen and Charles Barkley in their twilight, and got exactly dick for the efforts.

When you are losing Paul for nothing then this is a great haul imo.

Scraps if you were just trying to trade him in the middle of a contract sure. But WAY better haul then Jimmy or DeMarcus deals.

But the point still stands that when stars are traded it's NOT for other stars. So many of us who suggest this are laughed at by others who say the ONLY way to get a Jimmy Butler is by trading Dame/CJ. Well, the proof continues to pile up that that's rarely the case.

There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of what happened here by some people on this board.

Paul was not traded for scraps. He opted-in on his final year because he was agreeing to go to Houston. As Blue9 was saying, he was basically signing there. This allowed the Clips to get some value for him, and he can retain his bird rights for after next season.

So this is not another example of our team standing on the sidelines. We weren't going to try to sign Paul, and we shouldn't have tried.

What if Blake does the same? Opts in, and they get pieces for him from us.

Crabbe + Collins + future pick for Blake? I bet they'd do that. Would we?

You don't have to trade stars, but you do need desirable assets.

The wolves traded Dunn (the 5th pick last season), LaVine (a young talented prospect still on his rookie contract), and the 7th pick in the draft.

I personally think that's a bad trade, but how could we match that offer without including CJ or Dame?

No. Crabbe + Meyers and a future pick for him would be better (not that I think Collins will be a star, I don't know..just that Paul didn't get a current lotto pick player for him).

That is because stars are almost always only traded when they want to leave the team in free agency. Jimmy is the one exception I have seen in many, many years. Stars predominately aren't dealt when they have 3 years left on their deal for example. I firmly believe a Butler deal at last year's deadline would have taken CJ for them to pull the trigger. They weren't ready to rebuild. Now they are and CJ's contract doesn't work for them. Plus he is still poison-pill until July anyways and they moved Jimmy in June.

But I agree with your overall point. Don't expect to get a big time star back. Picks and young talent is the way to go most times anyways.

Not Collins - that's an overpay. They have zero bargaining power. They can have any combo of Crabbe/Turner/Meyers/Davis/Aminu...and if Neil is feeling generous maybe Vonleh or Swanigan and a 2nd round pick.

Paul, Harden, and Moreyball is a crappy fit. 52 wins, 1st round exit.....

They won 55 without CP3. They added a hall of fame point guard without giving up much. They are in the 60 win territory.

It's a horrible fit. You can't just put star players together and expect them to automatically succeed. It doesn't work that way.

This is when they do the same to blake griffin and move the team to seattle. They suck to the top pick next year and draft that kid Broy was coaching and become our nemisis once again. Could you imagine a Doc/Stotts rivalry if we had to play them 4 times a year and they were the seattle team!?! That would be epic.
