Re: Tony Hawk's Project 8 I don't know if anyone has played this or not, but it's pretty good. I'll give a short review.First off, I didn't play the last two version of this franchise: THUG2 or THAW, so I can't comment in comparison to those games. I rented this from gamefly. I will say that I am pleased to some extent, but it could be better. They added a few interesting features. One is focus, which allows you to slow down the game as you hit a combo. Think of a bullet-time sort of thing. Then there's the "nail the trick" feature, which is similar to focus, except it allows you to control each foot as you move through the air... the back foot controlling how the board flips. I like the focus mode, but the nail the trick feature is a little flaky. It's pretty difficult to control, and is pretty much non-existant outside of career mode, as far as I can tell. There's also graffiti tags around career mode, which basically test your ability to grind, get height, distance, wallride, manual, and so on. Finally, there's "owned" tags that make you follow a line in a combo successfully. If you fall down or break the combo, you have to go back and start over again.Gameplay: The controls are solid as with all the Tony Hawk games. They seem to get better in every one. I really like how the game is one big level, with no loading required. I have no complaints as far as gameplay is concerned. It's fun and kept my interest. Also, Jason Lee is in it, which makes the career mode pretty fun. 9.7/10Sound: This isn't one of my big issues with a game, but it is suprising how many games have terrible music/sound these days. My roommate rented Dead Rising recently, and it had terrible sound. I mean really, it keeps you in a limbo between laughing and wanting to shove a screwdriver into your inner ear. Anyway, the music in THP8 is pretty damn good. There's some classic music along with some good new artists. It's pretty solid. 9/10Graphics: Incredible. The characters' mouths look kinda weird, but they are still so lifelike. The skaters look exactly like in real life... you can tell that Tony Hawk is Tony Hawk, Jason Lee is Jason Lee, Bam is Bam, and same with the others. The movement that your skater makes is very realistic. This is one of the big reasons I rented this game... I wanted to see how good it would look. 10/10Features: This is a critical part of the game. There is some stuff that they hit, and some stuff they missed a bit. They got all the big skaters to get into a motion capture suit. It took all their movements along with the board's movement, which I think is pretty sweet. So basically, when you see the skater on the screen, it's their actual style. The problem is that the career mode centers around a skater that you create, so you're not going to see that feature a lot of the time. I'm not a huge fan of the career mode. It's fun and goes really smoothly, but it's just so damn short. And for someone who has played a lot of this franchise, it's too easy. I have played 5 iterations of this game, and I beat it after having it since Friday.A lot of people have problems with some features that are missing. Create a park is basically gone, so if you liked that, too bad I guess. The create a skater is stripped down a lot. There's not a whole lot of stuff to choose from... even choosing/editing your board is stripped down. It used to be that you could change griptape, wheel color, and there were tons of board graphics. Not so much anymore. I really don't care about any of these that much, but for some, it might be annoying. Also, apparently there is no multiplayer for PS3. I don't care since I rented it for Xbox 360, but yeah. Ragdoll physics are stupid, albeit hilarious. 6.5/10Replay Value: Even though the career mode is lacking a bit, I think the replay value is pretty good. Even though the game is pretty short, there are a lot of hard (aka sick) goals to acheive, and multiplayer is awesome. I played a little bit online, and it's really fun. There's a good mix of good and bad players online and games are short, so you get to see a good mix of them. There's also some cool secrets to unlock. 9/10Overall, I like this game a lot. I think what kills it the most is how some of the features are implemented. The career mode's length doesn't help, either. If you've played the old games and you like them like I do, I suggest you rent it. If you absolutely love the games, buying it is not a bad option either. If you're not really into skating or whatever, I still suggest you try this game. Even though it's easy for me, it has a learning curve to some extent, and it is very fun. 8.5/10 total
Re: Tony Hawk's Project 8 I only played the demo and it's a really fun game. All the THPS games are awesome though, and the besic ones like #1 and 2 were the best to me. When you get pro at the game there's no stopping.Good review.
