Oh, man. I still remember the shock and disbelief when Musberger uttered that famous line. It was as if CBS was giving the finger to the entire state of Oregon and every Blazer fan everywhere. I have hated CBS for the last 40 years because of that insult.
I have to admit, I held a grudge against Musberger for the rest of his career, even though he later claimed it was out of his hands.
Yes, in at least a few recent interviews, Musberger says that he was appalled and frustrated at the network's decision to cut to the Kemper Open immediately after the end of the game, and simply as play-by-play announcer, he had no pull to change the decision. It was all the old white men suits back east setting the programming schedule. He stated that he wished that he had tried to convince the CBS crew on hand to continue videotaping the celebrations to be shown on the network at a later time, but they started packing up immediately after the cameras went dark.
It was a slap in the face. I remembered vividly how CBS had filmed the east coast celebrations, from the court into the locker rooms, after the earlier playoff rounds. Then that. I was young and I took it personally, LOL.
I'm sure it was. Of course it was. Those kinds of decisions are made by the network, which is why I still hate CBS.
Let's face it, the Lakers attract more $$$ than we do. ESPN has paid billions to the NBA and it is just normal for them to keep hyping the product in the biggest market. I listen to talk radio in my car and I have to admit, the NBA has never been so popular than the last 3 months, although the playoffs and the finals were a dud. On youtube, it is all about the NBA and Lonzo. From a marketing standpoint, guys like Lonzo are good for the league. His fans want to see him succeed just as his haters want to see him fail. It is all about the noise, the clicks, the marketing hype. Just give the National Media the finger and move on. I'm cool with the Blazers remaining low key. I truly believe that in the next couple of years, we will be the surprise of the league. Our back court is hitting their prime and our front court is two to three years away from domination. Nurk+Caleb will be able to match up against any NBA front court. A healthy Blazers team should be top4 in the West. No doubt.
