I know what you are thinking. Please, what's the latest news on fleas? Unfortunately, some of them are carrying plague. Yes, plague as in the Black Plague or the Black Death that killed around 60% of the European population in the mid-1300's. Should you be alarmed? Should you...um...flee Arizona? No.

Finding fleas that are carrying Yersinia pestis, the bacteria that causes plague, is not completely unusual. Plague still plagues people here and there in different parts of the world. For example, as the World Health Organization (WHO) website states, 2015 had 320 reported cases worldwide, which led to 77 deaths. As shown by WHO list of plague outbreaks, most of the larger outbreaks since 2000 have occurred in Madagascar, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Algeria. But, plague still does pop up in the U.S., since 2000 between one and 17 reported cases a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mainly in the rural West. All ages seem to be at risk (cases in the U.S. have involved infants and people up to the age of 96). Fleas don't seem to discriminate who they bite.
