Canzano tweeted that what he meant by not a driveway player is he plays really hard and tough he's not just playing HORSE
The only reason I can see for Canzano reporting positively about something is to eventually turn negatively on it when others are feeling positive, or were positive because of his commentary. Build them up, and then mock others for supporting him during the struggles, essentially. "This is a franchise that has Dame and CJ in their prime clamoring for another star, and you added Swanigan as your piece? This is why the sky is falling" Lather, rinse, repeat.
Will play better in a structure. In coach speak, it means role player. That's not meant to be a slight on Collins. Superstars are driveway players.
While it's true that "superstars" tend to be able to play well in a "driveway" type atmosphere (see: All Star games), I don't think this is meant as an insult. At least, overtly.
Plenty of non-superstars are good at playing in "driveway" games (see: summer league). Jerryd Bayless proved to be an excellent driveway player. Qyntel Woods too. Being good at unstructured one-on-one isn't the same as having high-level NBA talent.
Keep in mind that in the 2.25 summer league games we saw of Collins he was playing with Pat Connaughton at PG and RJ Hunter at shooting guard. I cant wait to see how he looks playing with Dame and C.J. Hell, even Turner and Napier would be a big improvement over his summer league back court. I also look forward to seeing both Swanigan and Collins playing next to Nurk. Vonleh looked so much better playing with Nurk. His presence should also benefit our rookie big men. BNM
Driveway Player: Basketball player able to adjust to uneven surfaces, withstand asphalt or concrete burns and dishing out fouls within ten seconds of every shot attempt.
I always took driveway player as a player who couldn't play a lick unless it was on their own driveway. But hey I'm not the columnist...
Ask yourself "what does JC have to personally gain?" When you ask any question like the above. Dude is a relentless self-promoter.
Step 1 - say some shit that doesn't make sense and could be construed as an insult to rile up the Blazer fans. Step 2 - make up some lame explanation for what that statement actually means. Step 3 - rinse/repeat
Wait what ? care to elaborate ? I'm legitimately curious because I feel cul-de-sac is the french translation of dead-end, but does the meaning actually differ in english ?
