Religion Make no mistake about it: the alt-right is a cult, and this is how its members lure people in

I'm not controlling speech. These aren't rules. Research it yourself though I'm sure you would find some spin on it considering you think even Hillary Clinton did nothing wrong. I agreed with the whole article except the beginning because it's just not true. I guess you would rather just label people alt right off a fucking meme though. Makes sense though I will never forget the time you labeled a few others and I alt right in a post. All I had to do was straighten you out and link you a post I had, a negative one on Donald trump. Man, did you back track fast, tail tucked between your legs.

Yeah there is a level of trolls. They are the extreme level. They can do funny shit sometimes but for the most part I don't agree with their behavior. They kinda just don't care and want to get anybody worked up in any way they can. Talking about 4chan and the kekistan movement of course. Check this out, I found this one quite funny. 4chan convinced people this sign meant white power. They even got some media to cover it and journalists reacting. It was pure trolling. Buzzfeed is pretty garbage but they cover the gist of it. Of course they throw in "the trump internet" though these trolls have no affiliation. At this moment in time it's just easy to offend people on the left so that's what they do

4chan also managed to find Shia labeoufs anti trump flag in the middle of no where based off flight patterns in the sky

Your memory is incorrect, I labeled you a trump fan in that thread, not alt right. Or are you saying there's no difference?

What you don't know is that the local sheriff asked me to quit toying with you that night, so I did.

Seriously, I do not think you are alt-right.

You do repeat their talking points however, so I think you are a tool of the alt-right. Is that better?

I fully support your decision to be a troll, but even that takes practice.

    A couple of thoughts.

I think @Cippy91 is partially correct. There are many non-racist users and uses for Pepe. However there is a significant swath of alt-righters who have corrupted this meme and use it for hateful and racist propaganda.

The problem is that this is how alterations occurs to our lexicon anc general zeitgeist. There is a scale that tips with language and once that at scale reaches a tipping point the meaning of a word changes. Two examples from this thread. 1) the rainbow Nazi flag - not used or seen often enough to alter the meaning of the rainbow flag or the Nazi Symbols. 2) the Swastika - was a peaceful Hindu symbol but used to such extremes that it has indelibly been moved to represent racism and Nazis. The question is, had the Pepe meme tipped the lexicon scale? That's debatable but I think it has. Just the simple fact that most of us know that it is used in racism (even if that's only some of the time) elucidates a shift in meaning. You can fight against that shift as some have with terms like "fag" or "retard" but you will end up judged according to the prevailing definition and not ones own intent.

The second thing I wanted to point out is this is not a freedom of speech issue. If I judge you as wonderful, racist, humorous or ignorant based on your use of a word or meme, I am not having the government impede your right to say such a term.

That does not represent the city of Portland, it is just an innocent humorous flag that people can fly for any of several purposes. I grew up in Flag culture and you can't convince me otherwise.

The biggest difference I see, is that Pepe was not used in a negative context before, whereas homophobic terms or terms that are now deemed insensitive towards people with special needs were never considered innocent and comical. When someone says, "that's gay" they aren't saying it in a positive way. To them, gay = bad and that's how they're using the term.

At the same time, I always thought it was a little unfair that something so innocuous as a rainbow should have been conscripted as the universal symbol of homosexuality. If someone puts a rainbow flag outside of their house, what's the first thing you think of? I usually think that they're showing their support for gay rights, and while I'm totally on board with supporting gay rights, I think it sucks a little bit that something so universally loved as rainbows will now have an alternate political meaning.

Or Christians with their Jesus fish on their cars...

Similarly, I remember LA Raiders gear was banned from my schools because their gear was widely used by gang members.... in fact I think it was mostly just because of NWA, but still...... how shitty would it be if Blazers gear became a symbol of a gang or a hate group or a cult or something like that?

Can you imagine if the pinwheel became a symbol of something political? You just want to support your favorite team, and now if someone sees you wearing a pinwheel they're going to question if you actually support this other thing. Reminds me of red hats.... if you wore a red hat around election time, a lot of people automatically assumed you were wearing a MAGA hat... or that you supported trump. So now, if you wear a red hat, you have to worry that someone might jump you. I think it was TBPup who had a story about being hassled because he had a red hat on, and it was a Doernbecher hat no less.

The Portland State logo is just a swastika with erectile dysfunction.
