Yeah and we need to keep that from happening unless there is a clear case of negligence.

What were they supposed to do?

I can usually think of something that could have been done but this is just so bizarre.

This is the WORST MASS MURDER SHOOTING IN THE HISTORY OF OUR CONTRY! Happened 12 hours ago and we have 55 posts on here........ are we numb to this? Is there nothing more to say? Do the majority of us on here want guns taken away and the Trump supporters that think people need to own guns "for their protection" tired of stating their opinions?
I have said before that I served my country and have shot everything from a handgun to grenade launcher to a .50 cal mounted on a Hummer......that shit has it's place, on the battlefield. I respect peoples opinions, but you cant not sway me into thinking you should ever need guns. I don't own one and my family is very safe. Peace to you!

Security to prevent something like this doesn't seem to me like a difficult problem as much as an inconvenient/expensive one. If you can get tens of thousands of fans into a sporting event where they have to go through a metal detector and/or have bags searched, you can certainly do it at a hotel. Nobody's going to like it and it's going to cost money, but what's the alternative in this crazy world of copycat nut-jobs and terrorists?

They don't just let you walk through the metal detectors. They search bags and purses and individuals.

There is no benefit to him not having the gun in his hotel room. He could have driven down to the Life Is Beautiful concert and jumped a barricade and started shooting. He might not have killed as many people but that isn't that much better.

There was a food truck festival at Sunset Station this week. If this nutjob worked in a truck he could have poisoned far more.

They can't search 3000 rooms or guests to fill them.

Even if they could nobody would leave the house if they started doing it.

True. I'm certainly not saying that I have the answers here. Just that it's going to be another topic that needs discussion and planning for. A couple of decades ago we couldn't have imagined having to be scanned for weapons, have our bags subject to search, and the full range of security measures that we now subject ourselves to in order to get on a plane. Things like this are going to expand the discussion of personal liberty vs. security.

This is the deadliest mass shoiting in United States history, there has to be some recourse. After horrible events like this, like the florida night club, and all the shootings before, we ask ourselves how do we stop this from happening again? What can be done? The truth is sadly, not much will come of this. We could put in place stricter gun laws, but it won't happen. There are too many against it, afraid that 2nd ammendment rights will be taken away. We could ensure better treatment for mental healthcare. That probably won't happen either. Insurance companies don't want to have yo pay for it. There is a sad truth to this all, America and the world is in a fucked up state. This shooting will be dwelled on, then people will go back to living their lives, then the next one will happen. What can be done?

That first part is certainly not true. Taking the high point is always an advantage in an ambush scenario. Having a place where you can have multiple weapons and many rounds of ammunition handy is certainly an advantage over being limited to what you can carry on you.

Vegas is a pretty amazing place given the reputation

Vegas is a different place when it comes to police. The bulk of the police duties fall on private security guards. Like, if there's a fist fight at a casino, it'll be the security guards who will take the guys to their holding room and they call the cops to take them away.

The hotels and casinos are possibly the most security conscious places I've ever seen. Even more than the airports. They have cameras everywhere and teams of security guys watching those feeds. They could be better trained to look for the same guy coming in with a number of suspicious packages. Or something.

That sort of thing can possibly be figured out by technology, too. Facial recognition software is pretty darned good, AI can drive cars on the streets, etc. They can surely recognize the pattern over time of anyone and specific individuals coming and going.

I suspect the hotel will be sued for massive dollars and that will light a fire under them all to figure out better security.

    That's my take.

Yeah, I said he probably wouldn't have killed as many. Doesn't mean we can stop mass shootings.

Who wants to get searched when you check into a hotel room?

If you said with certainty that there would never be another shooting people might go for it. You can't and we won't.

What exactly do prayers and condolences do to proactively make people safer? Especially coming from Trump, all that is hot air.

It's high time for change and the faster those wheels get in motion, the better.

I can understand owning a handgun to protect your family or hubting rifles to go hunting, but I have always felt there is no place for assault rifles and automatic weapons in the hands of civillians. There needs to be stricter gun laws. People shouldn't be able to go to gun shows and load up on weapons.

Vegas has gone way downhill since the mob is gone.

This guy likely would have been found in a hole in the desert long before he got to shoot at people.

We must put politics aside. In my next sentence, let me be completely political.

I have a suspicion she wouldn't be going to a country music concert.

    Glad she's OK.

And I never said that we can stop mass shootings. There's a huge quantitative difference here between the typical mass shooting and this one that leaves close to 60 dead and over 500 injured. You start talking those kinds of numbers and you're approaching 9/11 impact. We already know that ISIS has taken note. Do you think that they won't be considering options for even bigger massacres?

Nobody wants to get searched checking into a hotel room. Our modern reality is that we're going to have to put up with an increasing number of things that we don't want to do.
