Rep. Tim Murphy said Thursday that he will resign from Congress this month, a day after the eight-term Pennsylvania Democrat announced that he would not seek reelection amid a personal scandal.

“Upon further discussion with my family, I have made the decision to resign my position” effective Oct. 21, Murphy wrote in a letter to House Speaker Paul D. Ryan. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served the people of southwestern Pennsylvania and to have worked with the talented and dedicated men and women of the United States Congress.”

    ...

The resignation of Murphy, a clinical psychologist, comes after a news report claimed that the married Democrat had asked a woman with whom he had an extramarital affair to get an abortion.

Murphy, 65, said in a statement Wednesday: “After discussions with my family and staff, I have come to the decision that I will not seek reelection to Congress at the end of my current term.”

Murphy first publicly admitted in early September to having an affair with Shannon Edwards, a woman half his age, a revelation that dealt a blow to his reelection prospects in 2018. Murphy was first elected to the House in November 2002.

In a Jan. 25 text message obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Edwards said Murphy had “zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options.”

According to the newspaper, a text response from Murphy’s cellphone number that same day said that his staff was responsible for the antiabortion messages: “I’ve never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don’t write any more. I will.”

why would a dude have to resign just for asking a woman he had consensual sex with to have an abortion?

How do you go back to your conservative pro life base with any face when you epitomize hypocrisy? He's a lying hypocrite. He should resign.

Anthony Wiener had to resign over something completely legal.

Politicians resign over sex scandals. That's par for the course.

Little known fact: Whenever a Republican has to resign from office due to a sex scandal they immediately have to register as a Democrat.

First, most of his district, before voting for him, voted for Murtha for 40 years or so. Pittsburgh isn't the Bible Belt.
And I'm being slightly tongue-in-cheek, b/c I would personally call for his resignation. But it seems from his record that a) he is a smart dude, b) has back some intriguing bi-partisan legislation and c) his constituents have voted for him for 15 years.

I would submit that many of you have no problem with having sex with whoever wants to have sex with you.
I would submit that many of you have no problem if the woman had had an abortion (with or without his request).
I would submit that many of you don't have a problem voting for people who have proved hypocritical over something they've legislated or called for legislation on.

Is it just that it's "sex-related", so like Dviss said, it's par for the course to resign for a sex scandal? Unless you're the President? :stirthepot:

It's not just the abortion, it's that he threw his staff under the bus to try and pacify his mistress. "I'm not anti abortion, it's my staff, I swear! We can have sex again, right?"

didn't dig that deeply into it. Makes sense.

As I said, I'm nowhere close to defending this clown. But I'm legit curious why he "had to go", knowing the demographics of much of the board.

I don't think very many of us are in his district in PA. Our demographics don't matter much. I assume he has some idea about his constituents and what they will/won't tolerate.

I haven't seen anything from his constituents. I've seen notes on FaceBook, CNN, the Posts above and Sly's WaPo article above. Just was curious.
