Which was more impressive? IMO, I think Kobes 81 was. Both Wilt and Kobe got there points against really bad teams. But I did some research, and it seems that the starting center for the NY Knicks then was only 6'5...they had taller players, but they didnt play much. Wilt was 7'2, the competition wasnt as good...easier for him to get 100, than it was for a guard in todays game to get 81. 99% of Wilts shots were probably 3 feet away from the basket. Thoughts? This is where I got the knicks roster
I'm probably going to get bashed for this, but I'm going with Wilt's 100. I'm not taking anything away from Kobe's 81-point performance, because that was absolutely amazing and the best individual scoring performance in a game that any of us have ever seen, and probably will ever see. However, the bottom line is that Wilt scored 19 more points than Kobe did, and that is why I'm going with Wilt.Both performances were absolutely brilliant (unfortunately all of us have only been able to see one of them), but I'm going with Wilt.
Kobe, the sole reason Wilt had 100 points, is because he had the greatest free throw shooting performance in NBA history, going 28-32 at the line. Plus, it was harder for Kobe.
No one will ever know, maybe except for a few lucky people. But I have no idea of what circumstances Wilt had to go through. I'm going to go with Kobe's because it's the safe answer and it seems that stuff like high scoring was common for players at the elite level for that time period (Baylor, Wilt, etc.). Not something common for this time period is what I'm getting at.But then again, scoring for a guard is easier today. It's very hard to decide.
81 is better. Wilt basically shot freethrows all day. Bosh was a bad example for whoever used it but I think Howard would do a good job. Wilt would still be the best center in the league, I just don't see him putting up those crazy numbers.
But, the way rules are these days. I mean, a player literally is not allowed to play defense anymore. A guy who was used to taking a beating all day would love the league today.

Wilt and Russell were the only 2 guys back then it seemed with good size.
5 examples of players right about the height and weight, not those skinny little toothpicks, of current NBA big men. And guys that were good defenders too...

I looked up the roster, and the center who got the most PT was 6'5....not saying those guys didnt play at all...but IMO, Wilt had more advantage than Kobe had. Kobes 81 is more impressive. Its really hard to say so cause we never saw Wilts performance...and they never actually finished the game, but Kobe, as a 6'6 guard, in todays NBA and getting 81 is more impressive IMO.
I think scoring 19 more points than Kobe Bryant did in the same amount of minutes is more impressive. Period
