Man, I'm old enough I can remember Jimmy Jones calling the games. Later, he took a job doing Sonics broadcasts.
That team will be lucky to win 29 games. That Adelman guy has a high bball IQ. Might make a good coach one day.
Some of the stand out names (stand out to me for some reason) on the rosters for that game. Pat Riley, I know Portland drafted him from the Lakers but I can remember him ever actually playing for the Blazers. He did not want to be in Portland. Jim Barnett, still around, announces games for the Warriors. Still an ass. Mel Counts, with Pheonix in between his multiple times with the Lakers. Still the man from Coos Bay. Neal Walk, Big Wookie center. He stands out in my mind as the guy one of the Blazer Centers dropped like a rock with a short uppercut. Can't remember the Center, probable Shlueter or Imhoff. Not this game, a couple years later, the TV announcer going nuts, Walk is down! Out Cold! Ha! these teams did not play Pete Carril basketball. Had to wait until Dr. Jack for that treat.
And thanks to Comcast, it'll be another 47 years before they're televised* again. *By televised, I mean openly available to the public rather than sold only to those willing to pay exorbitant prices.
It is not really comcast. The Warriors games are carried by Comcast in the Bay Area, which is carried by Dish and Direct TV with a standard subscription. The art of the deal is the difference between the Blazers and the Warriors
AH! That's It! Meyers Leonard equals Mel Counts! Seeing him listed on the Phoenix roster make me think of it. Counts could shoot the three point ball very well, although he played before the NBA adopted the three point shot, he had that range. Drafted by the Celtics to back up Bill Russell, he was a disappointment on defense. Not at all what Russell brought to that part of the game. Meyers is probably a little better in that department. But Counts found a home with the Lakers, swapped to Phoenix a couple times but the Lakers brought him back. He was the backup to Wilt Chamberlain on 6 playoff teams. Mostly shooting the long ball when in the game and shooting it very well, playing D as best he could although rather thin at 7'0" Meyers has more horse and should be better on D but... I think he is Counts.... The Blazers ought to count on it, and plan to use it as it is or trade him to SA, they will. The Blazers don't win that game last night without Leonard.
The Warrior channel has been on Directv for years, definitely before they were good and anyone cared about them. I think the Kings channel has too.
I grew up with that voice. I can still hear it today as clearly as I can hear Schonely. LOL Jimmy Jones was an institution on KPTV sports broadcasts. Like Tom Peterson.
The team celebrated the first game by watching the latest epiaode of Adam 12. Martin Milner gives the leader of a hippy drug ring a strict talkiing to. .79 six packs of Stroh's beer all around.
