The Regular season is about a month away from ending, who do you guys feel deserves to be the Defensive Player Of The Year(DPOY) ?Some guys that should be considered IMO:Josh SmithShane BattierMarcus CambyRon ArtestEmeka Okafor
Shane Battier is my pick. He is relentless on defense and has bothered both Dirk and Howard during the 4 meetings this year against the rockets.
I'm going to go with Shawn Marion actually. The Matrix has really been one of the bright spots on D with the Suns which is something that the Suns do not excell at. We've seen him guard everyone from Kevin Garnett to Gilbert Arenas, he is a great all-around defender.
Shawn Marion is defently deserving of it, he's always been overlooked but hopefully not this time.Shane Battier, This has pretty much been his best year on the defensive end so I don't see why he dosen't deserve DPOY ethier.G-Wallace, yeah he hasen't been as good on defense as last year but it still exsists.Camby, one of the best shot blocker and just dosen't get the respect he should.Igoudala, he's been more involved in the offense but do not forgget about his defense, consider this guy a pick for DPOY aswellbut yeh Battier deserves it, I just felt like going on for a bit.
Last year I thought Artest should have gotten it he always place good D.But this year my vote goes for Camby I got to watch him more due to AI going to Denver I follow Denver now enough to say Camby. He is #1 in block shots I think, and up there in rebounds per game.Battier also plays good D.Marion of course should be considered.
What about Marion?Here's my DPOY rankings:1) Marcus Camby2) Jermaine O'neal3) Shawn Marion4) Emeka Okafor5) Ron Artest6) Shane Batier7) Josh Smith8) Andre Iguodola9) Ben Wallace10) Gerald Wallace
I don't know why you have Marcus Camby ranked 1st....and why you don't even have Bruce Bowen on your list. And I'll just ignore your blatant homerism by having Jermaine O'Neal second. Yeah freaking right. It is hard to say. I don't think the League will give it to Ben Wallace again, and I think Marion is an overrated defensive player. If I had to pick, I'd probably give it to Bruce Bowen.
My question is, is the DPOY decided on the 1 on 1 defensive plays, or the general player's contributions to defense? Emeka Okafor may not be excellent defensively one on one, but he's a force to certainly be reckoned with down low. Ron Artest is a good one on one defender, but is not much of a shotblocker as Okafor is. However, my pick would go to Shane Battier. He is the best overral by far. His shotblocking is not very good, but he is excellent at taking the charge, and will lock you down 1 on 1. He is also underrated at stealing the ball, people disregrard him, because they think people with a big frame can't be as quick as he is.<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (CB4AllStar @ Mar 26 2007, 03:24 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I don't know why you have Marcus Camby ranked 1st....and why you don't even have Bruce Bowen on your list. His perimeter defense is real bad though, because he gives too much space in between in his defense and gets caught in picks. Otherwise, 5th in the NBA in steals, 8th in rebounds, and 20th in blocks. His defense is very developed IMO.

His defense is wayyy overrated. There are lots of players you've never heard of who drop 20- on him and he never does an amazing job of guarding superstars the way Ron Artest does. And Jermaine O'neal:10 rpg (14th) 2.7 bpg (4th)
Shane Battier. His effect on the Rockets has been huge. 3 reasons for Houston becoming the best defensive team in the league. Shane Battier, Jeff Van Gundys System, and Yao Ming.

If he lacks skills on defense, then why do you think everyone associated with the NBA calls him one of the best defenders in the League? Kobe Bryant said that he was the player that defended him best out of anyone, he's an amazing perimeter defender, and he won't let up at all.Alright, I'll mention some games where he has done a good job on superstars.Tracy McGrady: 10-25, 26 points (He can get 26 points all he wants against Bowen if its going to take him 25 attempts to get it.Tracy McGrady: 7-17, 22 pointsLBJ: 7-17, 19 pointsCarmelo Anthony 6-15, 15 points.Ray Allen 4-20, 12 pointsJoe Johnson 8-21, 23 pointsCaron Butler 5-19, 10 pointsCaron Butler 7-18, 15 pointsD-Wade 7-17, 18 pointsVince Carter 7-18, 17 pointsJosh Howard 6-16, 16 pointsSome of those guys aren't superstars, but they are all elite scorers, so there you go. Bown can shut down great scorers, no question.Stats only give away a small portion of a player's defense. Stats do not tell the whole story. Jermaine O'Neal is NOT the 2nd best defensive player in the NBA. Those averages aren't even 2nd best in the NBA, and blocking shots is the thing he does best defensively. I bet you NO voters for DPOY would put him 2nd. You probably just looked at Blocks and Steals to make your list That's not what defense is mostly about. It's about shutting down your oppenent, and preventing him from driving, and challenging all his shots, and preventing him from getting easy baskets inside. That kind of stuff DOES NOT show up on the stat sheets, and that's what defense is mostly about.
Do you guys feel that Mutumbo should be considered? Just wondering to create discussion. But again, Josh Smith has been a fu*kin beast this year. Especially at blocking shots. He is second this year in Blocked shots behind Camby and ahead of Okafor. His one on one defense is not bad either.
I wouldve easily gone with Ron Artest...but for some reason, I have a feeling he wont get it. My pick would either be Emeka or Camby. If Charlotte was winning, I think Emeka would be a clear pick. Every other night hes getting 4-6 blocks like its nothing. Alonzo should be mentioned also though.
