All of you that posted "old school" should be rewarded! I'm liken SRV and Allman Brothers lately. People don't realize how great Dicky Betts was! For pure entertainment value I like Little Feat's " Time loves a hero" album.
I'm a huge fan of both those bands....Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat with Tower of Power horns backing them up was a masterpiece....Tied to the Whipping Post is another great one...
Good music such as this just does not bore the savvy rock fan! I invited two of good buds for a weekend in Seaside Heights NJ and we got toasted and attempted to play pool in a bar. The place had a multiple speaker system- juke box that featured Allman Bros, SRV and Little Feat! After we consumed that music a skin head type dude played metal. I enjoyed it but did not appreciate it!
Love Danny Gatton: I seem attracted to soulful and expressive guitarists. Danny and Roy Buchanan were the best. They put every scream of their souls into their axes. Also, they were from around the same Washington DC/Virginia area and would have cutting contests over the telephone. Sadly, both men are dead now so we will never know what that sounded like. Here's my favorite Gatton song.
If I had to pick one American guitar band who left them all in the dust is Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band. Their history of guitarists; Alex St. Clair, Bill Harkleroad, Jeff Cotton, Ry Cooder and Jeff Lucas are as good any rock group that played ANYWHERE. Obviously, if you check out my avatar you will see I am a huge fan. But they attempted probably the most musically adventurous album in rock history Trout Mask Replica. I used to get stoned and go to football games listening to it on my headphones. Made the games so much more meaningful. Here is a good video about the album itself.
