Bringing this up because a friend was waiting at an airport near a straight couple and overheard them. The woman apparently had been offered a big promotion and the man said if she loved him she would turn it down, because then everyone would know she made more money than he and it would be humiliating.

My friend wondered, is that still a thing in 2017, almost 2018?

So I'm asking the guys on the board. I'm not talking heiress; thinking if you could marry an heiress that would be great. I'm talking about a woman who works for a living in the more or less ordinary way; would you find it a problem if
    1) she made more money than you, but friends/family did not know?
    2) she made more money than you, and your friends/family did know?

    Gracias

The last couple of years I worked my wife made more than me (not a whole lot, but still more) and I loved it (and was proud of her for it). She had more education than I did and a higher level job (proportionally). She deserved to make more than I did......and as far as the household income goes, it’s all one shared pot of money. We all benefit regardless of who makes what. Any guy that lets his ego get in the way of what’s best financially for the entire family is a clueless douche bag who probably needs to live on his own for awhile to see how far a single salary will take him....

I would LOVE it if my wife made more money than me. And honestly, she probably deserves to. She's easily as competent as I am, far superior at multitasking, and has a much better work ethic than I do. My only advantages (besides being male) are that I went to college, didn't take any time off from working after the kids were born, and am a bit quicker on the uptake when it comes to tech stuff.

The idea of a man's ego being wrapped up in being the primary bread-winner for his family is antiquated and misguided. While I do feel a responsibility to provide for my family, and would feel like a failure if we were unable to meet our needs, I would have no qualms about contributing to my family in other ways if my wife were the one supporting us financially.

No problem with that whatsoever. While I think there was a time when a man felt that his masculinity was somewhat tied to his role as “provider”, I don’t think that is the norm in today’s society. It’s all family income as far as I am concerned, and the more the merrier.

As I'm now semi retired my wife makes more than me now and as UCD said...it all goes into the same pot at the end anyway....I'd never had a problem with females making more money than men....when I fully retire I'll be a great house husband..

Mine does. She's a Naturopathic Doctor. If we get married, I'd feel like I married up!

I'd be super fucking PISSED. Only because I'm assuming it isn't enough for me to quit working.

I would love it. I'm not married though. I'm too selfish.

She makes less if she works the day shift, more if she works the night shift.

No problem if Mrs. FromWA made more than me, though she doesn't (and won't, likely).

About the "if your friends/family knew" part of it...is comparing salaries a thing? My parents don't have the first clue what I make, much less my friends.
