I think I understand Trump pretty good without talking to him personally. He grew up rich, in a pretty unusual way most of us would never understand. He says some pretty smart shit every so often and he's got some charisma at the least. He isn't a normal person I'd expect to run into at the mall. I don't even mean that I understand how he thinks necessarily, I just understand how he can be a certain way.
I think here is a reasonable point to make an observation. I am quite sure you mentioned you were of the INTP character type. As am I. It is amazing as to how accurately character type will predict political position and even more. I often make the effort to attempt to type people when I think it will be of use.
