I feel like the last few MARIS61 posts got lost on their way to the "Racist Republican Party" thread.

The 2nd part of your sentence is a goddamn lie (I don't have to get a health exam to go to Europe do I?) and I will be GLAD when your dinosaurlike ideology experiences their same fate.

If you wanted to go to Canada without a passport, you'd be locked up at the border.
I think the point you're missing due to the messenger (both Arpaio and Maris) is that if you wanted to bring a dog or a rosebush into CA, you would need a health exam for it or it would be confiscated and burned. They have checkpoints at basically every major entrance to the state. You might say there's a "wall" of checkpoints set up to stop people from bringing in plants and pets. But since it's illegal immigrants who are being discussed, there seems to be a dichotomy. Does CA care about diseases that affect the population, or not?
I've had apples and cherries taken away from me at the I-5 checkpoint. Never have traveled with a pet, though, so YMMV.

Please talk about humans man... I've been to Canada MANY times. Of course I need a passport. I don't get my ass checked though. :dunno:

OK, I'll stick to humans, but I was bringing up the point that CA doesn't let fucking cherries into the state, but doesn't care about illegal immigrants.
I've been strip-searched in Charles de Gaulle, with a passport. And checked with every CBRN detection device at their disposal. To come back into the US you have to declare whether or not you've been on a farm or near livestock, because you're subject to medical questions and potentially an exam. If you have (and don't disclose) you're subject to confinement. And it's not just us.
You can't sail a ship into the most ports (I know for the Bahamas and in West Africa) without a detailed declaration of health.
I had to get a visa to go to Ghana. I had to show shot charts to get the visa.
Australia -- full medical exam and proof of insurance required.
New Zealand - exam and chest x-ray.
And it's not just the racist white Christian devils doing it. Feel like going to Hajj?
And if you're coming from Africa, they straight up just administer it to you preventatively.
Forget that Arpaio was the one that said it. The point that law-abiding citizens and law-abiding visitors and law-abiding immigrants "get their ass checked", and that CA confiscates cherries and checks out pets, but we collectively turn a blind eye when "Illegal immigration" is at the heart of it is not logical. In fact, turning a blind eye toward illegal immigration causes a lot of problems for the immigrant. There are tons of anecdotes (many of which I've brought up before). In West Seattle Somali women and their families were being shoved 10 at a time into an unheated attic and charged over $1k (and I shudder to think about physical and sexual abuse) with no ability for help b/c their captors are holding their deportation over their head. Instead of showing them how to apply for asylum, or immigration status, or whatever.

Excellent point BfromWA! I just went through that I5 check point yesterday. The thought about checking me for Oranges
but not giving a shit about the people on the real boarder did occur to me. It is mind boggling stupid.
Geez, I don't know how we got here!!!

I loved to hear the stories told by the older folks about coming through Elis Island when I was a kid. It took about 21 days on average to complete the process. Some did not make it.
If people are so smart these days, why do they discount process and caution?

Picking strawberries as a kid doesn't make you a farmer.

I'm guessing you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. For 2 summers when I was 12 and 13 I picked pears in Central Point, other than that my teenage years were spent on my grandfather's ranch bucking hay, irrigating, mucking stables, cutting cattle and helping repair fences and whatnot.

There is no real issue with bringing pets into CA - the inspector might require a proof of rabies vaccination if they think a dog seems unhealthy - but generally - this is not an issue (we did not have any issues with our pup when we moved to California).

Plants and produce are an issue however - because California is mostly naturally separated from the rest of the country as far as pests are concerned and is pretty much America's produce basket - so it makes sense to ensure that it is protected.

    https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/plant/pe/ExteriorExclusion/borders_faq.html

(interesting point - WA apples will be accepted - but not apples from anywhere else)

Quite frankly - since America loves cheap produce - and immigrants are a big part of the work-force in CA agriculture - the combination of checking produce and plants and liking immigrants that work the fields seem to go hand in hand...

FWIW - There are tons of immigration checkpoints in California as well - there is a big one between Oceanside and San Clemente on I-5 for example:

    https://www.cbp.gov/border-security...-diego-sector-california/san-clemente-station

This is just 1 of 8 stations like this in San Diego county.
