    Here’s why;

    1. Got under the tax. No one cares about Allen’s pocketbook, but this was important for numerous reasons, but for me the biggest is it now allows Portland to offer the non tax paying MLE (we may still have a little to clear before FA, not sure) and in the expected market, the difference is substantial. Yeah yeah Portland can’t sign free agents, but I’d expect them to pursue someone like Will Barton, and there’s a good chance they land him if they do imo.

    2. No DeAndre Jordan. I’ve talked enough about how I was against it. This most likely also means they’re committed to developing Nurkic, who they should get at a bargain rate anyway.

The only downside to me is we’ve now given up two young players for essentially nothing, but that’s the consequence for the disastrous summer of ‘16.

And no we haven’t added any on court improvements either, but there was no one out there that would’ve made a huge difference anyway.

So while it’s not the deadline most of us wanted, it’s not as bleak as some may make it seem.

technically they can offer the regular MLE, but it will hard cap the Blazers and would make it impossible to re-sign all our FA.

There's no way that is going to happen. The most we'll be able to spend is the tax MLE

Yeah I noticed that, but couldn’t they just clear the necessary salary before free agency?

Who is the other young player we had to move? Crabbe?
I thought he was part of the disastrous summer of 16'? We lose him regardless if we don't match.

Either way I agree with you. The right move was to trade someone for zero or little money coming back.
We all said Noah had the most value to move in order to accomplish that.

This also means Davis probably stays long term. I’m happy about that.

Yeah Crabbe but I didn’t really include him in that disastrous summer. I wanted to keep him, despite his salary. But let’s not make this another Crabbe thread lol.

There's also this season, during the upcoming buyout market. Spotrac has their current salary obligations post-Vonleh-deal at 118,763,344, and CBA FAQ has the apron at 125,266,000. So theoretically if Neil wanted to sign one of the guys who is expected to be bought out in the next couple days, he could offer a deal starting at any amount up to 6.5M this year.

Not that I necessarily think there's going to be anyone made available that would be worth that kind of a deal, but it is something to pay attention to.

I have a really hard time caring about billionaires saving money. No spin is going to change that.

What's the spin? A non tax MLE most likely gets you an impact player. A tax paying MLE might get you a Hezonja.

Good for them? It was to save Allen money. Neil doesn't make moves to help the team, and if he does - it's secondary and almost an "oopsie"

And as @BrianFromWA pointed out, we won't have the non-taxpayer MLE unless we get below the apron, for which we would need to shed even more salary.

This is a move to save PA $. Nothing else.

OK so what is the downside of being a repeat offender? Because next summer I see us being over it. Isn't there some penalty for being in it 3 years in a row? And when does our trade exemption expire for Crabbe. And when does the year end. Can we end up under the luxury cap this July 1st (For this current year) and then use the TPE in July to go back over?

Question about this; would signing someone for the rest of the season affect the tax?
