A school resource officer accidentally fired his gun inside a middle school in Alexandria, Virginia, during school hours on Tuesday, police say. No one was hurt.

The officer was inside his office at George Washington Middle School in the Del Ray neighborhood when he accidentally discharged his service weapon about 9:10 a.m., according to Alexandria police.

The shot was fired as the officer, a five-year veteran of the Alexandria Police Department, was sitting down in his office, police said. A department representative declined to say whether the officer had taken his gun out of his holster.

"I just think it was an accident that happened, and we're going to investigate it and find out, and we're going to move forward," Capt. D.C. Hayes said

The officer checked the area for any potential injuries and found that everyone in the 1,500-student school was OK.

He notified his supervisor and school staff, and classes continued as normal, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear if any students or teachers were nearby.

The incident occured amid a highly charged national conversation about arming teachers.

The head of the school system said she doesn't think arming teachers is appropriate.

"We had this happen with someone who's a highly trained officer. I think that speaks for itself," interim superintendent Lois Berlin said.

Well so far with the few incidents that have already happened I would say another brilliant Trump idea will likely kill an innocent person before it saves any lives.

Franklin HS student's Snapchat with gun leads to arrest

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A 17-year-old student at Franklin High School was arrested after police said they took a Snapchat photo with a handgun in their waistband inside a classroom.

The student, who was not identified, was lodged at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Home. The firearm was also taken, police said.

The school was alerted to the photo on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Franklin High School Principal Juanita Valder sent an email to the school's community alerting them of the arrest. Here's a copy of the email obtained by KOIN 6 News.

    Dear Franklin Community,

I want you to know that on Tuesday afternoon we received a report that a student had posed for a photo with a handgun in their waistband while in a Franklin classroom. The photo was sent by Snapchat to another Franklin student, who then reported it to us. We immediately reported the incident to our Student Resource Officers. Police investigated and later arrested the student at the student’s home shortly after. In following our current safety protocols, we were able to effectively collaborate with the SRO’s, District Security and our team, to establish immediate resolution to the issue.

Given recent events, I understand that it is alarming and shocking that one of our students would bring a gun into our school. We place student safety as the highest priority at Franklin, and we are thankful that one of our students took the “see something, say something” credo to heart and reported the photo. Our students are very aware of the strict prohibition on bringing weapons of any kind to our school. We are also grateful for the dedicated SROs and security officers who help ensure a secure and welcoming climate at our school.

In recent days, we have had conversations here at school around school safety with PTSA and staff, and have already planned for next Wednesday’s tutorial to have a Q/A with students, which will give us another opportunity to remind students of the importance of reporting. We will continue to talk about ways we can keep our schools and students safe, and we encourage you to talk to your students about what happened here and let them know they are free to ask questions and let their feelings be known to our staff. I am truly sorry to have to report this news to our wonderful Franklin community, but we want to be transparent with you about this event. I am always bolstered by the support you have shown and continue to show me, the school and our students.

    Respectively,

    Juanita Valder, principal
