I told the story earlier about the young son of a family I knew who was on a sleepover at another friend's house. This other friend pulled a loaded shotgun out from under the bed to show off when it accidentally went off striking the young son's thigh and causing serious damage. Whoops, there I go again recklessly throwing around that term 'damage'. I hope everyone can figure out what I mean by damage in this instance.

I didn't say they should be regulated the same way, but sensible regulation, such as keeping firearms out of the hands of those with a history of mental illness would improve public safety. BNM
Well you say this, and I believe you think it is correct. But tell us who it is that you will deprive of their right to defend themselves with arms when necessary? While we as a society might have that right, I sure don't think we have the knowledge to use it well without walking all over the god given rights of individual people.
The right to bear arms is not a god given right. It is a right granted by the US government through the 2nd amendment of the US Constitution. It has nothing to do with god. The Constitution also guarantees the separation of church and state. Let's keep religion out of this discussion. What about everyone's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Fire arms in the hands of the mentally ill seriously impacts those rights for many people. No screening process will be perfect, but anyone who has been diagnosed with specific mental disorders, or who is on certain antipsychotic medication should not be able to possess a fire arm. They are a significant risk to others, as well as to themselves. BNM
