Bodyman, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you lift a car off the ground (on jack stands or a lift), and with the engine running floor it, doesn't the speedometer indicate you are driving at X mph?

It can. I don't know if there are newer cars with actual speed sensors that measure wheel speed instead of relying on a sensor on the transmission.

Example, my 1969 olds cutlass with a 455 engine and an open differential could spin the right rear tire through all three gears. The speedo would read 120 mph and the car would barely be moving.

That car had a cable driven speedo that was connected directly to the transmission.

This SUV I believe has an electronically driven speedometer that gets a signal from a speed sensor on the transmission which feeds a motor in the instrument cluster. Basically the same idea but no cable.

I assume this vehicle would also read an inaccurate speed with the tires spinning.

From memory of the pics, there is no way that thing hit 90mph in such a short distance.

If the vehicle was floored and the speedometer quickly hit 90 way faster than the car actually could I wouldn't be surprised if it got stuck.

I think it means they were accelerating off the cliff.

    Not an accident.

It doesn't really matter what speed they were actually traveling when they flew off because.... it was a cliff.

When I read that it made me wonder if the reason the kids didn't have their seatbelts on is because they were trying to jump out right as it went over.

Probably would be difficult to unfasten in an emergency like that.

Yes, you've caught us. All Democrats are terrible people. You could have found that out if you had attended one of our regular Wednesday meetings where we get together and plot out evil acts.

No, I know but from memory of that area there is now way they were doing 90.

More like spinning wheels and reading 90

Yes. I'm sure when they went over the cliff, flying through the air, and no wheels were touching the ground I'm sure the wheels were spinning.

There should be a strong retaining fence along the entire curve, with a parking space a walking distance away where it's safe to stop.

And a second fence, a pedestrian curb, 4 feet from the cliff edge, with warning signs that there's less ground beyond the curb that it appears.

    And change all similar turnarounds.

Except the vehicle came to a complete stop and then accelerated off the cliff.

How do they know? Besides, I want no parking access there, as I said. That would have prevented it, suicide or accident. It's too dangerous for accidents, being on a downhill curve.

Let tourists walk a few yards from a safer spot with a strong fence between the new safer parking spot and the cliff.

They know because their car had a device that recorded the actions of the car such as speeds at different times and braking actions. I believe this is installed in all cars for the last few years.

This sick and evil person was determined to kill her family. All the safety barriers in the world could not have prevented that. So they fix that one area. Then what, she accelerates on the highway and swerves into oncoming traffic killing her family and now someone else's?

    It's her fucking fault. Period.
