Some people, I'm sure, do own guns because of fear. However, an awful lot of people own guns 'cause their pretty much necessary for hunting big game or fowl. Hence I own a shotgun for fowl and a bolt action hunting rifle for big game.

that's an interesting take, but I don't think it has support in the record around it's adoption. I know there are is a lot of dispute about this, and many have not looked at the events and conversations around it, but I have to admit that I share the belief that you cannot defend the freedoms of the first amendment without the second amendment. Without the second amendment we would be a bunch of helpless sheep. Watching the freedoms that some of us in the U.S. appreciate (speech, press, religion) quickly disappear in Europe should put us on guard that none of us are that far from losing those freedoms.
I live in one of the safest cities in the U.S. In the last three years, two separate people were killed when a bad guy entered their house to rob them. Yes, the odds are low. But, I'm not going to be one of the ones that just sits there and lets someone kill my family. If others choose to just trust it will never happen to them, that's fine. I don't like vaping or pot. But, I also don't vote against others having the freedom to do either. To each his own. I would just appreciate those that don't seem to like guns, for whatever reason, minding their own business and not impeding those of us that do. I also would appreciate people that live in cities or gated buildings or communities to stop trying to set policy for those who live 50 miles from the nearest police station. Now that you got me ranting anyway, I would love for someone to pull up the stats on how many people were killed because of someone talking on or texting from their cell phone while driving and compare that to the number of people killed by AR-15s over the last few years. I can almost guarantee you that it isn't even remotely close. You want to save lives? Make it mandatory that cell phones don't work while in cars.
and who is saying you can't own a gun? The only real debate is what is necessary to "protect" your family. Do you need an assault type rifle or would a hand gun or bolt action rifle or shotgun suffice?

A bolt-action rifle for home defense? ??? sigh. (bolt action rifles are long and difficult to handle in a home setting. Also, they are very challenging to operate load a backup round quickly. Also, most bolt action rifles are either 22s, which wouldn't stop anyone, or hunting rifles, which would instantly deafen your entire family) How about a baseball bat? Tell you what, how about you do a bit of homework. Don't trust me, but do some research. Look up ex-Navy seals or other special forces guys. There is lots of information out there. When you do, see what the consensus is for best weapon for home defense. (spoiler alert: don't read below if want to be surprised) First: education: 1) "automatic" weapons (machine guns) are essentially illegal in the entire U.S. with the exception of some with special permits. 2) "automatic pistols" are really semi-automatic pistols. The "automatic" part her refers to them loading the next round by themselves. 3) "Assault rifle" is a hunting rifle with a pistol grip. A standard hunting rifle fires in the same way, it just has a different grip. 4) "AR-15" does not stand for "assault rifle 15". Look it up. 5) "Silencer": they don't exist. Nothing can make a gun silent. A "suppressor" reduces the volume of a gun from 100% to about the level of a jet engine at take off. Just enough so that you don't deafen the shooter and his family. Did you know there are several physician's groups who are trying to get national allowance of suppressors to protect hearing? The only reason it hasn't passed is the Hollywood crowd and ignorant big city liberals really believe what they see in the movies is real. Having said that, the best home defense weapon is actually the trusty AR-15 with a suppressor. It is substantially more accurate than any pistol (don't argue if you haven't shot both), doesn't deafen your family, doesn't over-shoot as the bullet tumbles when it hits its first object (pistol rounds penetrate more, look for video demonstrations). And, to your original question, the State of California, and almost every Democratic Senator I have heard speak if they had the chance. So for the Supreme Court is the only thing that has held California back. And yes, they have recently attacked "assault rifles" again--so, I removed my pistol grip so it is no longer an "assault rifle". I'm sure it is much safer now that it doesn't have the pistol grip. So yes, I do not want uneducated politicians who don't even know what an automatic pistol is or what AR stands for writing laws on guns that have no effect on crime, but make it harder for decent people to defend themselves from those criminals.
