Well that explains Stotts’ coaching over the past two weeks ;)

That is 100% correct. And OKC has a lot to play for. In some scenarios, OKC can fall to 8th seed. Unless OKC wants to play Houston in the first round...

To be clear, the ONLY way we get the 5 seed (thus no HCA) is if the Spurs win, the Thunder lose, and we lose.

Being that Portland lost the season series 2-1 to the Spurs.
How does Portland get HCA over the Spurs if Portland and San Antonio finish with the same record?

Basically why does the Memphis & OKC game mean anything for Portland?

Wow... so we have a very small chance of getting the 5th seed then?

    Glad you asked. Here's how:

If we lose, we're 48-34 and if the Spurs win, they're 48-34. If we were tied with only SA, they would have the tiebreaker. But here's where it gets fun. If OKC wins also, they are also 48-34. Now it is a THREE WAY tiebreaker. In other words, which team has the best record against the other two teams in this 3 way? We are 1-2 vs SA but 4-0 against OKC. Spurs are 2-1 against us and 2-1 against OKC. OKC is 0-4 vs us and 1-2 vs Spurs. So here is how the three way tie is broken:

    Portland 5-2
    SA 4-2
    OKC 1-6

That is why an OKC win gives us HCA even if the Spurs win. Understand?

But if we lose and SA wins we would have the same record and same conference record so wouldn’t they jump into 4th?

Because if OKC also wins, they ALSO have the same record as Blazers and Spurs. So it comes down to a three way tiebreaker. We win the three way tiebreaker, SA comes in second, OKC comes in third.

How come we win the tiebreaker? Just trying to wrap my head around it all.

If it’s record and conference record doesn’t it go to head to head matchup? Okc has a worse conference record than SA..?

    No. Read carefully:

It is a THREE WAY tiebreaker. The first THREE WAY tiebreaker is head to head between the three teams that are tied.

Blazers are 4-0 vs OKC and 1-2 vs Spurs so they are 5-2.
Spurs are 2-1 vs OKC and 2-1 vs Blazers so they are 4-2
OKC is 1-2 vs Spurs and 0-4 vs Blazers so they are 1-6

So head to head to head, we have the BEST record so we are 1st, Spurs have the SECOND best record so they are second, and OKC sucks so they are third. Understand now?

Yes wow that seems odd to me but thanks for laying that out.

So if NO and OKC win are we still 4th??
I need to ask these questions while I have someone’s attention lol

Yes. In fact, only one of those teams has to win for us to at least get 4 seed. Of course, if we win, none of that matters and we're the 3rd seed.

So pretty much we just need OKC to win to get home court, right?

Or Pelicans yes. Or we could win. All three of those scenarios, we have HCA.
