Checked out "Quick Pitch" this am to see the game highlights. Great to see Yankee Fans include Donnie Baseball in the pre-game roll call.

When going to any game from first game ever, and still, I've always had the radio in one ear; listening to t/game.

During a Yanx/Halo 3 game stand in Anaheim; with Joe Torre doing radio and TV broadcasts, as both Play by Play and Color Commentary (85-89). Joe was one of very few play by play/color guys who could pull both off; until the Singing Cowboy added Reggie Jackson latter on, and Reggie fkd it all up. You know how Reggie liked to run his mouth and ramble on endlessly. (I can tend to do the same.) :smiley-pat:

Anyway- my point. During a 3 game stand in 89, and during Sparky Anderson's 1 month Leave of Absence from Detroit, Joe had Sparky in the booth. Anderson whether ya' love him or hate him, was one big class act, and a deep sea of MLB info/insights. Both were imo.

Joe asked Sparky, what one player or players in Baseball do you believe is/are the finest example to Kids. Sparky said: "It's Don Mattingly by far, he's in a world of his own". Sparky explained: there are several reasons why, but the biggest one is, He always comes back out an hour after the game and takes 100 to 200 ground ball reps. His work ethic is second to none; he's setting the example to all Gold Glovers, players and fans/kids alike"....
Of coure the two went on to add those other reasons, agreeing #23 was robbed of a back to back MVP's, by a SP (Clemens) who both agreed SP's shouldn't be (one that always stuck in my craw) in t/MVP ballot, that's what Cy Young's are for.

Time for another fish fry. All bats on deck have to take advantage of this feast, a seafood gumbo of pitching!!

Tank and all Pitchers should find success against this hodgepodge lineup.

Skowron, Chambliss, Mattingly & Tino were the outstanding 1st Basemen during my time as a fan. Of the four Mattingly is number one. Loved to watch #23 play ball. Got in many an argument some times leading to near throw downs over best defensive, Mattingly or Hernandez.

Prior to Tonight's Game The Yankees placed Tommy Kahnle on the 10 day DL with right Shoulder Tendonitis and recalled Luis Cessa from Triple A.

Pepitone was more of/in my generation, as Moose departed but a yr or 2 after my first memories of t/Yanx... Would of loved to of seen a decade of Skowron. Or- Mantle playing 4 gms at SS, 1954.

I do recall well- The Mick playing 1st in 67/68. In 67 Mick was robbed of a Gold Glove imo, by G. Scott. Mick had a .993 fldg pctg to Scott's .986. Even with bad knees/ankles/legs, Mick made playing 1st look natural as I can recall. If my memory serves me well, which it doesn't always....

I'd often hear others mention Hernandez over Donnie-BB, and brainwashed all Little Leaguer's to think/know otherwise, thus only adults I'd quarrel with, the kids knew better.
Once I'd hear of "Post Season Keith", I'd comeback, but did he ever do anything Ruthian??? i.e. #23's 1987 HR rampage.... just for starters...

few have ever been able to scoop a wild throw out of the dirt blindfolded, and stretch well beyond his frame, looking like the incredible elastic man, as Donnie BB in my biased Yankee mind....
