The selection of Marvin Williams over Chris Paul was obviously another one of Atlanta terrible mistakes, but the kid still clearly has a lot of potential. However, I don't know if I see a future superstar in him, or a player that will be worthy of the #2 pick in the draft (especially the 05 draft). Do you guys see a future superstar in him? I know he's still raw and it's still a little early to tell. He has the potential, but I don't know if I can watch him and say "wow, he's going to be an absolute stud." What do you guys think?

Well I havent seen him play alot so correct me if I am wrong. He is tall but isnt that strong. He has range and athlectism and I can see him maybe average 21ppg 7rpg 4apg in his prime

I think he's degressed. I was high on him coming into the season, but he just hasn't improved at all. His shooting is not great, he gets most points off open 12 foot jumpers, or dunks. He makes the occasional highlight dunk, but he doesn't do much else worth noting. His outside shot is WAYYY inconsistant, he makes alot of boneheaded plays, defense isn't very good, but his size and athleticism gives him the potential to be a very good player in the league.. He just needs to keep refining his skills.

Yeah, he's gonna take time. We knew coming in that he would be a project, he came 1 year out of college into the league at age 19 with raw skills. He has the size, athleticism, and potential. We won't know for a few more years what kind of player he really will become, but I just don't see a future superstar in Marvin.

One year ago, I might disagree, but now - I just don't know if he has the work ethic to become a superstar like he CAN be.

Coming out of college I was not that overly impressed with him. He just seemed too passive, mistake prone and not 'outstanding' at any part of the game. My thoughts really have not changed, he's obviously an above-average player, but nothing like people were saying about during the draft. Probably a 20ppg guy like an Antawn Jamison in the future.

At the time this wasn't a mistake. Williams was a highly touted prospect coming out of UNC. That was one of those drafts where you knew what the 1,2,3 picks were in the first round before the draft even took place. The C's almost made the Pierce trade with Portland for #3 pick because they knew it was going to be Chris Paul. It's too bad he's digressed from what kingjamez has said, I haven't seen him too much this season and you know your Hawks KJ so I'll definately take that as an accurate analysis. I think an Antawn Jamison comparison would be the best result for this kid.

I think he has the potential to be a pretty damn good player, but not good enough to be a #2 pick in that draft. He is athletic, his jumper is pretty decent IMO, and he has a quick first step going to the basket. He is a versatile player, and I think he can do well in the league, just not as well as people thought when he was drafted. I see him maxing out at 19 and 9 for his career highs.

That doesn't matter. Yes, Marvin's stock was at an all-time high after his freshman year and going into the draft, but they passed up Chris Paul and Deron Williams to pick Marvin... a 19 year old raw talent forward to mix in with all the other forwards they have. They needed a point guard, two future star point guards were on the board, and Atlanta passed them. Huge mistake, it was from the get-go.

I remember being on forums during that draft and was bashing the hell out of the Hawks for not going picking Chris Paul....a lot of people were....

The pick would've made sense if Atlanta already had a good point guard, but they didn't. They were already cramped at the wing positions with Smith, Johnson, and Childress. Adding Williams just made it that much more of a logjam, meanwhile the best PG to come into the league since Penny Hardaway slips through their fingers. The Hawks are just a horribly run franchise.

People always talk about how you can never draft on needs, you have to draft on talent. Marvin is clearly someone Atlanta thought they could develop into a great player and still could develop into a great player Yeah they did pass up on Paul and D Williams but reguardless Marvin was a top 5 prospect coming out of college at that time. I don't really blame Atlanta for taking him.

He has potential. Marvin Williams shows some flashes of a Carmelo Anthony-type player. However, I don't think Marvin Williams will ever dominate in this league. Passing up on Chris Paul was a horrible decision.

No.. Carmelo is up there with Kobe Bryant as one of the most complete scorers in the league.. Marvin is inconsistant with mid range shots, not a real good 3 point shooter, and he doesn't have many moves at all, if any! Theres so many things Melo can do that Marvin can't, I dont really like that comparison.

I think you guys should deal Marvin Williams. If you trade him, you clear up your roster and your players roles are more defined. I just don't think Williams fits, picking him was clearly a mistake.

I couldn't agree more. It's to early still, but I'm calling him a bust. He's just ANOTHER SF that clogs up our rotation. We need to trade him for a vet, I bet we could get alot for Marvin too because everyone's still willing to give him a great chance. I'm done with him though.. Him and Childress, ugh...

He can't create shots for himself, and 80 percent of the time he can't even make open jumpers. The majority of his points comes from dunks, and... dunks

I think you can get good value for Marvin Williams, Josh Smith is just a better talent and you can't afford to lose him, so you have to trade Marvin Williams at some point, why not now when his value appears to be at it's highest.
