Just the eye test. I might be a coaching thing too. I know they have emphasized rebounding over fast breaks, which has helped them be a very good rebounding team. If you release players for the break early then you have fewer rebounders.

You just look at teams that break more. They look for that first quick pass down the court. We look to get the ball to Dame or ET and let them bring it up.

It could also be that our fastest wings can't handle well, so an early outlet doesn't work as well and you are limited to only breaks where they are clearly ahead of the defense near the rim.

I'm reminded of the difference between Dunleavy and Carlesimo as coaches. Like Stotts, Carlesimo would have amazing second-halfs-of-the-season, and we'd go into the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in the league... and fizzle totally. Dunleavy (not a great coach overall, but) would be the opposite - we'd be looking mediocre in the second half and then go on long-ish playoff runs. Remember when we knocked off a team that was favored over US (KG's Timberwolves) instead of the other way around?

That's not Dame. That's coaching. All Dame did was push the ball in college. Transition basketball is one of his strengths.

I will have to give you that one as I didn't see him play in college except for highlight clips before the draft. I would agree that it is probably the coaching preference to focus on rebounding at the expense of the fast break. Hard to do both well.

I wish Draft Express didn't sell out. I can't find his scouting video anywhere. They gave stats and everything in that vid.

Dunleavy only made it out of the first round twice (99 & 2000). And we never beat a T-Wolves team that was favored over us. In 2000, Minnesota was 6 seed vs our 3 seed. We won 59 games. T-Wolves won 50 games. That's the only time we've met them in the playoffs. We had home court advantage and we were favored.

I never saw Lillard in college, so I can't comment on that aspect.

However, in the 6 years he's been a Blazer - Lillard really hasn't pushed that hard to get out in transition.

I'm curious, does anyone know where we can get on/off transition stats per 48? I'd like to know if Portland does run more with Lillard on the bench.

Really i want Budenholzer, Stotts is a good Coach but i'm tired of him. 6 years is a long time.

Agreed. All you have to do is watch the press conference with Stotts and Olshey the day after we got bounced. Olshey credited the growth of the team to #3 Seed/HCA to “excellent coaching”. It was a stand of solidarity. There’s no way you have a 26 min Q&A together where you’re publicly praising your coach if you have any thoughts about replacing him in the days to follow. Just wouldn’t happen.

In a way I respect Paul for not firing either one, even if I don’t necessarily agree with it. He’s going to let them finish what they started. It wasn’t always like that in the past. We have some stability now. We’ve consistently made the playoffs. Its time to take the next step.

It really is dumb. We will probably be losing one of our two really good assistant coaches (who I think are mostly responsible for player development); there is a really good coach out there who is available, and now won't have to give up a draft choice for, and we are doing nothing. Does any reporter have the guts to ask Olshey "So you're going to keep the coach who is last in the league in assists, fast break points and taking charges and has lost 10 straight playoff games?"
