Heading to the Big Island for a vacation two weeks from today. Fortunately, we're staying up on the north Kohala coast, a long way from the volcano.
My parents are gonna be there too. Two weeks from Monday, I guess the tour they were going to do of the volcano is not available anymore.
I'll say the Big Island road crews repair roads faster than anywhere I've lived before....I watched Black Sands Beach burn to the ground when the volcano vented through South Point....it wasn't a big eruption back then but it was like hundreds of lava creeks flowing for long stretches
Tell them to go to Hilo and up the Hamakua coast...Akaka Falls...round Lapahoihoi cove and to Parkers ranch....the air will be better and the vog will not be so bad on the eastern to northern coast....stay away from Kona...Volcano...Kurtistown...Pahoa...Kalapana....Keau or Mountain View
I think they are going to be there one day only. Flying out of Kona? Back to PDX....mainly gonna be on oahu for a wedding
