The court struck down a federal law that required states to ban gambling on the outcome of sporting events. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was highly unusual: it did not ban sports gambling nationwide as a matter of federal law, but it said the states were not allowed to permit it.

Nevada was grandfathered in when the law was passed in 1992.

New Jersey and then-Gov. Chris Christie challenged the law, arguing that it violated the Tenth Amendment, which the Supreme Court has said prohibits federal laws that compel states to carry out federal dictates. The gambling law, Christie said, commandeered the states by forcing them to prohibit sports wagering.

Technically this doesn't affect Oregon, because Oregon was actually one of four states (along with Nevada, of course, as well as Montana and Delaware) grandfathered in due to existing sports-betting legislation in place when the federal prohibition was initially passed in 1992, but as most recall, the Oregon lottery "sports action" game was kiboshed about 10 years ago as a condition of Oregon being allowed to host NCAA tournament games. But if sports gambling is going to be opened up to all states--and according to reports, as many as half are planning on moving forward with sports betting legalization--you have to wonder how stringent the NCAA is going to be on that requirement/expectation.

Lot of good its done for us also, we got some crappy first round matchups (every 3rd year or so) in return for giving up the best casual sports betting in the country.

No doubt. Can only hope this prompts the NCAA to change their rules, and then maybe it'll make a triumphant return.
